We were lucky to catch up with Anita Sibul recently and have shared our conversation below.
Anita, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I started my entrepreneur journey quite young – at 15 y.o (if we don’t count in the times I was selling my toys in front of a local store at 6 y.o haha!). Back then I just did whatever felt good because I didn’t have those adult responsibilities, like rent, food etc. But nowadays when I’m feeling down, looking back at this time helps me and motivates me the most. Why? Because the most resilience is needed when you don’t have a specific need to do something, I could have just lived my teenage life but no, I started a Youtube channel, started building business connections. Now thinking back I realized I had such a small trick that always got me out of bed – I’d just ask myself “do you want 1 million followers?”. Before getting the obvious answer “yes” off my lips, I was already up from the bed because quite literally – there’s nothing else that helps me achieve that goal! My life – my responsibility – my opportunities!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Started my Youtube channel at 15 in a small country called Estonia. Immediately got made fun of by my classmates because of my bad english at that time, curly hair and everything in-between. Luckily being alone was not a problem for me and I continued making videos, building business connections with brands etc.
After high school I had some income already. But then I got a call from a friend of a friend who said we should start making Youtube after school classes for kids. So we did! A few months later we were in most of the highest rated schools in Tallinn, having even 3 groups at once in some! Kids loved it, parents loved it, we loved it!
At the same time I continued building my social media channels, more so Instagram, and soon it was a full time job. Media started recognizing me, got invited to events, worked with great brands.
The little teaching lover still stayed in me and soon after I created my own courses firm: Social Media Academy. Got a partnership even with the government already for my first course! 80%+ participants are still doing social media professionally.
With that going well and having achieved one of the top luxury influencers in Estonia title in media, I thought to myself “what else can I do?”
“One business should be completely out of my industry” I thought, so I created a food truck!
“Second business should change something in my industry” I was sure, so I’m almost finished creating a revolutionary app for the social media and influencers market that’s getting launched in 2025!
“But third…that should be something that challenges me as a person”, so I came to the USA. No connections, no help. And received 17 PR packages from different brands, from Lancome to Clarins, in my first month!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Be delusional – I often realize I have something I wished for a long time after months or even years. Because I live like I have it already.
2. Take responsibility – don’t rely on your friend, that Christmas bonus or employer. In a big scale that doesn’t make a difference but rather makes you slow down.
3. Show up – like I said in the first question about resilience. We can try to find shortcuts etc but in the end you always have to show up and do something to get what you want.
4. Be curious – even about totally random things! Why is the lamp built this way? Which country’s flag is this? How does the public transportation work in NYC? How can I get my shoes white again?
Firstly, it develops your brain to ask, find solutions. Secondly, you’ll find yourself making connections to find those things out (even if it’s just commenting on someone’s post about that shoe whitening) and as we know = net worth = network.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
My number one challenge right now business-wise is building connections somewhere I have no connections at – USA.
My number one challenge in personal life is to learn to be softer and going with the flow, not to take everything seriously all the time.
