Meet Garrick Higuchi

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Garrick Higuchi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Garrick, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

I get my work ethic from my parents, who always emphasized the value of hard work and perseverance. Growing up, I saw how dedicated they were to their goals, even when challenges arose. This taught me the importance of discipline and following through on commitments.

For example, during college, I balanced a full-time job with a full course load. I developed strong time-management skills to ensure I met deadlines and excelled in both areas. This dedication is something I bring to every project I work on.

In this role, I’m excited to apply that same drive and commitment to achieving the company’s goals and contributing to the team’s success.”

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m Garrick, and I’m passionate about my local independent pet store located in Kailua, Oahu Hawaii. I
Purchased the store in 2020 right during COVID and my goal is to grow the store’s brand and revenue in the local community.

What excites me most about my work is the ability to make a difference in people’s lives since I am part of the local community in Kailua, Oahu. For example, we participated by donating to the local high school atlethics programs

My journey started when I shared with a friend that I was looking for a side hustle for my retirement and he shared the business opportunity with me.. Since then, I’ve been focused on growing revenue, brand recognition and community involvement.

I’d love for readers to follow on instagram or facebook, or reach out to collaborate] Thank you for the opportunity to share my story!”

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, the three qualities that were most impactful in my journey have been resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to learn:
1. Resilience: There were many times when I faced setbacks or challenges, but staying committed and pushing through those moments made all the difference. For instance, when I was worried about finances for my business, I revised my budget and looked at opportunity line by line to save cost and to generate revenue as well.
• Advice: Embrace challenges as learning opportunities. Set small, achievable goals to build confidence and momentum.
2. Adaptability: In today’s fast-paced world, being open to change is essential. I learned this when [specific situation], and it taught me how to pivot and find new ways forward.
• Advice: Stay curious and keep exploring new approaches. Be willing to step out of your comfort zone—it’s where growth happens.
3. Willingness to Learn: Investing time in developing my knowledge and skills has been crucial. Whether it was through formal education, mentorship, or hands-on experience, every step helped me grow.
• Advice: Never stop learning. Seek out mentors, read broadly, and don’t be afraid to ask questions or take on new challenges.

To anyone starting their journey, focus on building these traits. They’ll not only help you achieve your goals but also keep you grounded and motivated along the way.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was instilling a deep sense of curiosity and resilience. They encouraged me to ask questions, explore my interests, and never shy away from challenges.

For example, my mother always emphasized the value of learning over simply succeeding. When I struggled with something, instead of stepping in to solve it for me, she guided me to figure it out myself, teaching me how to problem-solve and build confidence.

My father, on the other hand, modeled resilience and consistency. He showed me that success often comes from putting in steady, thoughtful effort over time, even when progress feels slow or obstacles seem overwhelming.

These lessons shaped my approach to life and work, giving me the tools to persevere, adapt, and keep learning no matter the situation.
