We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Daphne Alvarado. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Daphne below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Daphne with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My parents are very ambitious. They each earned their professional degree in the Philippines and immigrated to the United States. They worked very hard and provided our family with a solid foundation to excel in life and to find our happiness. My work ethic comes from them.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have a degree as a doctor of medicine. Throughout medical school, I have always baked. I started posting my baked goods online and needed a name. “Dr. Doughlittle” was born as a combination of my passion of medicine and baking.
I specialize in macarons, cakes, cupcakes, and decorated sugar cookies. I find inspiration in creating delicious treats that are difficult to find, offering flavors like Ube from the Philippines, where my cultural roots lay. I also create uniquely shaped character macarons, and tailor my bakes to any special event.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Most of my life has been dedicated to the medical field. This has taught me how to be patient with and care for others. I have worked in hospitality in the past, and this has taught me how to professionally communicate with courtesy. I treat others the way that I would like to be treated. Because I create custom baked goods, customers have specific requests that oftentimes require lengthy discussions of details. All of my past experiences help communicate these details to create unique tailored desserts.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
These past few months have been busy with holiday and custom orders. To remedy the feeling of being overwhelmed, I use a calendar and planner to write everything out in detailed order. This calms the fun chaos of running a bakery. Not only are orders written out, but also scheduled time dedicated to family and self-care.
