We were lucky to catch up with Majik recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi MAJIK, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
From a young age I had intense self-esteem issues. I never felt good enough. I saw other people’s confidence as a threat, and felt like people could see how afraid I was. My childhood was dysfunctional and the way I dealt with my internal pain was by masking it. I learnt that the only way to survive was to hide behind my abilities, in a practical sense, whilst struggling to find any real confidence. Over the years, I found myself facing imposter syndrome and had a need to ‘escape’ my own skin, which had awful consequences over time. Through therapy, I was able to process the deep rooted trauma and eventually find my true self. I had built up many layers over time and through the acceptance of my truth, I found I had been set free. I realised that in order to feel real confidence and have healthy self-esteem I needed to detach myself completely from who I was for others and be myself, for me. The rest is history as they say, and today I feel whole.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a creative, I go by ‘MAJIK’ and I grew up listening to music to escape. Lyrics became my obsession. The ability they had to reflect my own experiences, and take me to a place of peace was the reason I started writing in my teens. Dysfunction and bottled feelings was all I knew at home, so I am writing the songs I needed growing up. I want to be a voice for those who feel forgotten, lost and isolated. I want to tell my story to shed light on the tough aspects of emotional trauma, being misunderstood to ensure they can find something real in the world of modern music.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
As an artist, it is important to live your life as though it is exactly what you need, at that time. If you can embrace the struggles, and see them as learning experiences it will help you create your work from truth. Alongside the experiences that shape you, writing and expressing your journey is the way in which you present your art to the world so it is crucial that you keep your creative spirit alive, by using your words to paint pictures. Immerse yourself in the world of other artists. Listen, feel and learn from their craft and define yours in the process. Resilience is a paramount aspect of anyone in the creative field because for a long while, the world doesn’t care, until they do, so you must believe at all costs. I was 14 years old when I started writing lyrics in my bedroom, and have continued to work with words ever since, for the core reason that they gave me a purpose nothing else did. There are infinite songs no one will hear, but the important part was that they helped me get to where I am today, they were all part of the journey,
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I have not always had healthy coping strategies but I find the best antidote when I feel stuck keep it in the day. Life moves fast, and by it’s very nature it can overwhelming. By keeping it in the day, we are present. The saying ‘yesterday is history, tomorrow’s a mystery’ is a great one because it’s true. Why worry about the unknown or if it will work out? All we ever have is today, and we are provided with the energy for that day only. This is a great mantra but in the practical sense I try to exercise everyday, get fresh air and natural light, eat a well balanced diet and get good sleep. For me, sobriety is a core part of it all, because I realised it wasn’t something I could moderate and I now prefer to take it as it comes, whatever the weather!
