We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chelsea Husum a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chelsea, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
I have realized in life that not everyone will like you. I grew up always trying to be the nice girl and hoped that everyone would like me. But at some point, you realize that not everyone is going to be a fan of yours. Some people in life will downright want you to fail. And by fail, I mean fail miserably and flat on your face. I have realized that as painful as that might be, I’m not living my life for those people. I’m a kind person and I truly want the best for everyone. I want to cheer others on and help support the fellow dreamers out in the world. I know that there are people out there that need to hear me share my message, and some are looking for permission to step into their true authentic selves. Life is scary and judgement is really freaking hard. But I believe it is absolutely necessary to step out into the world and be real, vulnerable and authentic. On the days when I feel discouraged, I look at the many messages from people who are saying I brightened their day, or I inspired them in some small way.
When my book “Real Vibes Only: Unapologetic Confessions of a Hot Mess Mompreneur” by Landon Hail Press was released, I saw that someone left me a two-star review on Amazon. At first, I was hurt. I thought, who would actually do that, because they clearly aren’t a fan of me, and I highly doubt they ever actually read one page of my book, and they are trying to bring me down. But then I thought about the fact that they actually spent their time and energy to try to hurt someone else, and that alone says everything about that person. I would never do that to anyone who had poured their heart and soul and insanely vulnerable stories out into a book for the whole world to see. But, again, this wasn’t about me. And that helped me rise above it and realize that anyone who has done anything worthwhile in this world will always have haters. So bring on the haters because I am just getting started!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
By day, I own and operate American GPR & Coring in Denver, Colorado, which is a small construction company that performs concrete scanning and core drilling in the commercial construction sector. I am the host of the “Lip Service & Lashes” Podcast, which is for women wanting to live bold, unapologetic, real vibe lives. Through my incredible guests and my solo episodes, we share raw, unfiltered, and inspirational stories all while being vulnerable and relatable. My bestselling book “Real Vibes Only: Unapologetic Confessions of a Hot Mess Mompreneur” by Landon Hail Press is a memoir style featuring short stories from throughout my life. I hope it gives others permission to step fully and authentically into their own story and live their most fulfilled beautifully imperfect life. I also have spoken throughout Colorado and the United States sharing how I live boldly and unapologetically. I am a keynote speaker at powerful and inspiring events for women throughout the country. Overall, I believe that by being real and vulnerable with my own story, others can know they are not alone and that they can make it through any adversity that comes their way and come out stronger on the other side.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Confidence and self-love were incredibly important to my journey, and I can absolutely say that I would not be doing any of the work I am doing today if I didn’t deeply know, accept and love myself. I know who I am as a person. What I need to thrive and what I don’t need or want to allow in my life. I have created healthy boundaries with my time and energy that help me thrive as a high performer doing a million different things.
I have a deep understanding that I needed to heal past trauma to finally step into the person I truly am. You cannot be suffering and still dealing with trauma and be living your most amazing life. It just doesn’t work that way. I understood that I had to quit hiding the “ugly” parts of me and just fully embrace it all and be an example for others that they could do the same.
Realizing that I have zero desire to be perfect and embracing my hot mess beautifully imperfect self was one of the best gifts I ever gave myself. I learned to laugh at my mom fails and find other women who were genuine and real and were just trying their best. It’s exhausting trying to compare yourself to all of these seemingly perfect moms, women and entrepreneurs out there. And it’s wonderfully freeing when you just can be yourself and are content knowing you always try your best, but you’ll never be a perfect Pinterest mom, and that’s perfectly okay with me!
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I believe that you have certain zone of genius areas that you are really good at in life. I personally do not spend time or money trying to improve myself in areas in which I don’t enjoy or I’m not good at, and I delegate those things. I give those things to the experts and free up my time and energy to do the things I’m really good at. Because when you’re in flow and you’re lit up and doing the things you’re meant to do, I believe that’s what the world needs from you. For example, I hate math with a passion. I don’t enjoy it, and it’s always been a struggle for me. It’s like beating my head against a wall. So, I hire CPA’s and tax people and whoever I need to, to handle those tasks, because I don’t want to end up in prison because I don’t know how to do my taxes! Plus, it’s a waste of my time because it takes me so much longer to do something simple, than someone who is an expert at that thing. So, for me, I think it’s pointless to waste time and money trying to be an expert at everything in the world. I know what I am good at, and I spend my time there, and that’s where the magic happens. When I’m in that really high vibe energy and feeling inspired, that’s where I am most effective.
