We were lucky to catch up with Jennifer Bradley recently and have shared our conversation below.
JENNIFER, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
There is only one being that I can credit for my resilience, and that’s God. I have rebounded from situations that would have broken many, but it is through those difficult experiences, losses, set-backs, and heartbreak that have given me passion and purpose.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a Nurse Practitioner with dual certifications in both family and psychiatric specialty. I must admit, I’m most passionate about mental health than any other area. Mental health allows me to really get to know my patients on a different level; learn their journeys and overall stories. Patients often come to me feeling broken, grief-striken and hopeless. Being the medium between my patients and healing, and being trusted to navigate their mental wellness journey is a feeling beyond description. This passion inspired me to dig deeper into ways I could further treat and assist my patients. So I founded The Carrington Clinic, a mental health practice
located in Lawrenceville, GA with a satellite office in Mesa, AZ. My practice is named in memory and in honor of my young son, Carrington. Carrington was given harsh prison time at 17 years of age. He lost his life to this same system prior to his release from prison. Through my own tragedy and pain, I foster a sense of understanding and relatability invaluable to my patients healing process. Owning my own practice also allows me to give to my patients, what me and my son lacked on our own personal journey; and that’s compassion.
The Carrington Clinic treats patients from ages 12 and up. We curate a unique treatment plan that consists of both, pharmacological and nonpharmalogical therapies. Our services include medication management, supportive therapy, treatment for anxiety, depression, insomnia, mood disorders, ADHD, low self esteem, grief, and much more.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The qualities and skills I feel were most impactful on my journey, are my acquisition for knowledge; I never stop researching or learning. I’m always looking for ways to grow and better serve my patients, my listening skills; in this field you have to know when to speak and when to be silent. You have to not only hear people, but listen and reflect on what they are saying in order to give effective feedback, lastly, I have compassion for people. Compassion is one of those essentials we need in order to survive and thrive. Once you lose compassion, there’s not much in you left to give.
My advice for anyone who is just starting out would be to never miss out on a learning opportunity, even if you have to seek those opportunities out or connect with a mentor. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable because that’s when growth happens. Learn humility, especially when you’re dealing with a fragile population as mental health. Humility will allow you to listen without judgement. Lastly, one should always be aware of their own feelings, behaviors and thoughts. Self awareness allows for better communication skills, improved relationships and growth.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
I wouldn’t say I have an ideal client, because each patient’s journey is unique, and as our tagine says “Every Person’s Journey is Personal.” My goal is to meet each patient where they are, no matter what phase of life they are in.
