Meet Ashley Carlson

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ashley Carlson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout

Burnout hit me when I was trying to do everything myself as a mom of two under 2 and working from home. I thought success meant juggling all the responsibilities, keeping every plate spinning on my own. But it wasn’t healthy or sustainable. I quickly realized something had to change.

That’s when I started redefining what success really meant for me. Instead of believing I had to do it all, I began focusing on what truly mattered—both in my work and in my life. I also learned a crucial lesson: asking for help isn’t a weakness; it’s a smart move. By leaning into delegation, I discovered that not only could I offload tasks, but I could also empower others to shine.

This realization is what ultimately led me to create Elevate Virtual Business Solutions. I wanted to help other business owners and work-from-home moms, like me, find balance. Elevate is about providing the kind of support that allows others to focus on what matters most—whether it’s growing their business or being present for their families.

I shared more about this journey in the chapter I wrote for Business on Purpose. I talked about my struggle with overcommitting and how I came to understand the power of letting go and trusting others. That shift not only helped me avoid burnout but also opened up space for growth—for myself, my team, and the clients we serve. It’s a lesson I live by every day.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

At Elevate Virtual Business Solutions, we help entrepreneurs and small business owners streamline their operations and reclaim their time with personalized executive assistant support, bookkeeping, and business strategy. What I love most about what we do is building genuine partnerships—helping clients focus on what matters most while we handle the details.

We’re especially excited about our new “Get It Done” offer, designed to tackle big projects like inbox cleanup, bookkeeping setup, and SOP library creation—perfect for clearing to-do lists fast!

At Elevate, it’s about more than checking tasks off a list. We’re here to help clients build businesses that reflect their vision and create the space they need to thrive.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are resilience, the ability to delegate effectively, and strategic thinking. Each has played a crucial role in shaping my path as an entrepreneur and leader.

1. Resilience: Building a business comes with challenges, from setbacks to unexpected changes. Resilience helped me push through tough times, adapt, and stay focused on my vision. For those early in their journey, my advice is to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and remind yourself why you started—your “why” will keep you grounded.

2. Delegation: Early on, I thought success meant doing everything myself. Learning to delegate was a game changer—it freed up my time to focus on the bigger picture and empowered my team to shine. To develop this skill, start small: identify tasks you don’t enjoy or aren’t your strength and find people who excel at them. Trust grows with practice, so let go and see how others rise to the occasion.

3. Strategic Thinking: Growing a business requires more than just getting through the day-to-day; it’s about looking ahead and planning intentionally. For those starting out, take time to step back and evaluate your goals regularly. Align your actions with your long-term vision and don’t hesitate to seek mentorship or tools that can help you stay focused.

Remember, growth is a journey, and these skills develop over time. Stay patient, stay curious, and don’t be afraid to ask for help—it’s one of the best ways to move forward!

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

One book that has profoundly impacted my development is Dare to Lead by Brené Brown. Our entire leadership team not only read the book but also completed the 10-week workbook together. This experience has been instrumental in fine-tuning our leadership skills for both our clients and our team.

A few key takeaways that have stuck with me are:
1. Vulnerability as a Strength: Brené Brown redefines vulnerability, showing it’s not about weakness but about courage. Embracing vulnerability has helped me create stronger connections with my team and clients, fostering trust and open communication.

2. Rumbling with Tough Conversations: The idea of “rumbling” has been transformative for our team. It’s about leaning into difficult discussions with curiosity and compassion, which has helped us navigate challenges with clarity and mutual respect.

3. Clarity is Kindness: This nugget has been a game-changer. Whether it’s setting expectations, providing feedback, or managing relationships, I’ve learned that being clear is one of the kindest and most effective ways to lead.

This book not only shaped my personal approach to leadership but also strengthened our team’s culture. It’s a guide we all return to often, and I recommend it to anyone looking to lead with authenticity, courage, and heart!
