Meet Edyta Deng

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Edyta Deng. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Edyta below.

Hi Edyta, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

Embrace everything as an adventure. Whether the outcome is good or not, it’s all part of life’s journey. Funny to say but as an artist, I’ve come to appreciate even the darker moments because they expand my perspective and fuel my creative inspiration.
Last year, I experienced what felt like a perfect storm – all within a single week, a painful breakup, lost my job, had my car stolen, and several other following unexpected crazy things. Last year I had this wild one week where everything went sideways. Lost my job, went through a breakup, got my car stolen, plus a bunch of other crazy stuff piled on top. But I started finding it pretty funny like I was in some dark comedy shows. Every time someone asks about it, I just turn it into this wild story that gets people laughing.
Looking back now, I’m actually pretty grateful about how it all played out. My writer friends were into the whole saga so we turned it into a script. Losing my job pushed me to start my own company, which made me realize there’s so much more I could do. Plus, I’ve got this classic LA story that never fails to entertain at parties.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m a creative storyteller who’s passionate about bringing fresh perspectives to media and entertainment. I believe the most compelling stories often emerge from unique angles and unexpected voices – those perspectives that challenge our usual way of thinking.

What excites me most is pushing creative boundaries while building meaningful connections. I believe great content isn’t just about entertainment; it’s about creating moments that resonate and spark conversations. This passion led me to found Gadfly Media, where we’re focused on producing content that makes people think differently. The name ‘Gadfly’ comes from Socrates’ metaphor of being Athens’ gadfly – the persistent questioner who provokes society to examine itself.

Currently, we’re excited about our vertical shows airing on Dramabox. These shows represent what I believe is the future of entertainment – content specifically designed for how people actually consume media today on their phones. The vertical format pushes us to rethink traditional storytelling techniques and creates new possibilities for engaging audiences. We have several new shows in development set to release throughout 2025, expanding our portfolio of innovative vertical content. Looking ahead, we’re also exploring collaborations with emerging artists who share our vision for fresh approaches to storytelling.”

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I’d say resilience, communication, and keen observation. Plus, there’s this underlying thread of creative passion that ties everything together.

Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back from setbacks – it’s about seeing challenges as opportunities for growth. When you’re starting out, try viewing obstacles as plot points in your story rather than roadblocks. This mindset shift makes a huge difference. Sometimes what seems like a setback can spark your most creative solutions.

Strong communication skills have been absolutely essential, both in expressing creative visions and building relationships. But here’s the thing – good communication is really about observation first. Pay attention to how different people process information, how stories resonate differently with various audiences. These insights become invaluable when you’re trying to tell stories that connect.

Speaking of observation, this is perhaps the most underrated skill in creative fields. Everything around you can be inspiration if you train yourself to really look. Watch how people interact, notice the small details in daily life, stay curious about different perspectives. These observations end up fueling your creative work in unexpected ways.

But what really brings all these elements together is genuine passion and belief in what you’re doing. When you truly believe in your vision, it becomes easier to stay resilient through challenges, more natural to communicate your ideas effectively, and more exciting to observe and learn from the world around you.

How would you describe your ideal client?

Who aren’t afraid to take creative risks but also have a clear understanding of their goals. I get really excited about working with clients who say ‘let’s try something different’ while having a solid grasp on their intended impact or outcome.
Think of someone who’s willing to challenge traditional formats and storytelling approaches, but not just for the sake of being different – they want to innovate because they understand that’s where the audience is heading. They’re the kind of partners who get excited about experimenting with new formats like vertical storytelling, but they also have specific objectives in mind, whether that’s reaching a particular audience or conveying a certain message.
Essentially, I click best with those who balance bold creative vision with strategic thinking. They’re ready to push boundaries while staying focused on creating meaningful content that resonates with their target audience. These are the partnerships that lead to the most exciting and effective projects.
