We recently connected with Samantha Wyrick and have shared our conversation below.
Samantha, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I grew up in a small in Arkansas with 5 siblings, most of whom were much smarter and had a lot mor confidence then myself. Throughout the years, I learned that I had to create my own path and that path led me to the hair industry. When i first started I was not one to talk a lot or engage in conversations easily. Everything sort of changed when I was promoted to Manager of my first Sport Clips store. It was a new location in a up and coming area and I had a team who really had no clue what to do. I realized that in order for them to succeed I had to “fake it until i make it”. Eventually that mentality became my reality and i realized that no matter what got thrown my way, if i believed i could do it and trusted myself, then everything would work out. To this day, now in a position where i coach, lead and grow Managers, I’m able to use to use that to help others gain their own confidence.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am coming up on 10 years with Sport Clips. Currently, I am what is called an Area Leader. Through my position, i coach, lead and grow Managers to help them and their stores hit their goals. The best part of being able to do what I do is being there when there is that “Ah Ha” moment. The moment where what they’ve been focusing on finally makes sense and getting to see how they utilize that with their teams and being apart of their success. On top of being an Area Leader, I am also an Ambassador for our Dallas/Fort Worth area. With that, I’m able to go into barber/cosmetology schools and spread the great things that Sport Clips has to offer as well as help future professionals get a glimpse of what is needed once they graduate. We do a mix of technical education, product knowledge and growth setting to help the industry grow. I was also able to achieve one of my big goals this year by being apart of Sport Clips’ new promotional campaign and was asked to share my experience on stage at our National Huddle back in May!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1) Communication-Proper communications sometimes can be difficult but knowing when to listen instead of speak can make all the difference. Being able to verbalize your thoughts and ideals is the most productive ways to build working relationships.
2) Have a Positive Attitude- A person with a positive attitude not only can motivate others but can also help resolve any potential conflict. Being positive in my field is essential to grow not just your clientele but also yourself. No one wants to hang around any negative people all the time.
3) Be open to all opportunities- If someone would have told me 14 years ago when i got my cosmetology license that I’d be where i am now, I would have thought they were crazy. But throughout the years i just said yes to every opportunity, no matter how scary it might have seemed. While not everything has worked out, I know that I’ve been able to use those experiences to grow and become more knowledgeable and confident.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
The biggest challenge that I have been facing, as well as others in this industry, has been staffing. The hair industry was greatly impacted due to Covid-19 and we’ve been fighting ever since to regain what we lost. Working directly with clients after Covid was scary for a time but we have learned how to combat the negatives and focus on the growth. Switching gears from just trying to hire anyone and everyone to retaining the great stylists we currently have by making them feel recognized and providing the training and tools everyone needs to succeed has helped tremendously.
