We were lucky to catch up with Ravia recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ravia, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from an inner knowing. An unshakeable feeling that there’s something greater for me and I was born to be something other than ‘normal’. When I was a child, I was in a very traumatic car accident.
A drunk driver, who’d been circling the neighborhood at very high speeds, collided with me, my mom and baby brother. My mom died instantly. My baby brother died a few days later. I survived.
I was involuntarily thrust into survival mode as a child. Without therapy, I had to figure it out. My relationship with God played, and continues to play a major role in that.
So now, as I strive toward my ultimate purpose and goals, I feel that if I got through that horrible situation. I will get through my present circumstances and ultimately see the promise unfold.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a songwriter.
After that traumatic accident, I withdrew socially. In my earlier school years, I barely spoke. Afraid and ashamed that I was the only kid without a ‘regular family’.
So, I turned to music. One of the first songs I wrote started off “To be alone, and away from the pain”.
I didn’t know song structure or anything. But it gave me great joy to create music. I’d watch 106 & Park and the BET Awards dreaming of writing the songs they sung on TV. I wrote and wrote until my aunt said “You need a hook. Something that catches the listener”.
And from then. I haven’t stopped writing!
Currently, I’ve been writing songs for Tv/Film and focused on working with independent artists.
What I do brings me so much joy and fulfillment!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities that have been mot impactful are:
1. Self awareness of what I need to change
2. Openess to change and working on how I can evolve
3. Discipline to change and evolve
We are never born as a whole human being. We do not have it all figured out. There are moments in life and our childhood that greatly affect the adults we have grown to be.
I thank God that I have keen self awareness about my weaknesses. And I am always working to grow and get better in those areas.
My advice would be to really get to know yourself. What you want. Develop a love for yourself. Figure out your strengths and weaknesses. Spend time in silence every morning to get in tune with God and your inner dialogue. Identify your limiting beliefs. Work on changing and growing from the inside. So that the life you desire will eventually show itself in your reality.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
There are many books that have helped my growth.
As a Christian, of course I will say the Bible.
But, recently, I read A Changed Mind by David Bayer. And this book has been really helpful in offering a practical guide to overcome limiting beliefs no matter what your dream or goals are.
