Yoko, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

I firmly believe in lifelong learning. With today’s rapid advancements in scientific approaches across industries and the rise of AI technologies, it’s more important than ever to stay informed and consistently update my knowledge. Being a proficient interior designer involves more than creating unique designs; it requires integrating these advancements to craft spaces tailored to each project’s needs. As an independent interior designer, I strive to create environments that are beautiful, practical, and comfortable. I remain open-minded and ensure I stay informed by regularly meeting with vendors, reading industry articles, and attending expos to learn about new materials and market trends. This commitment to continuous learning is how I maintain confidence in my work.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

As an independent interior designer, I specialize in creating personalized spaces that reflect each client’s goals, unique style, and preferences. While I have a personal affinity for timeless minimalist design, my priority is understanding and incorporating my clients’ individual themes or tastes to craft environments where they feel truly themselves.

I believe that interior design should reflect the business concept, personality, and lifestyle of the individuals or entities involved, rather than simply following the latest trends. This approach ensures that each space is not only aesthetically pleasing but also deeply functional and meaningful.

Incorporating scientific elements, such as biophilic design principles, is central to my work. Biophilic design emphasizes the human connection to nature, enhancing well-being and comfort by integrating natural elements into interior spaces. This can include the use of natural materials, the incorporation of plants, and the maximization of natural light, all contributing to creating a harmonious and rejuvenating environment.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, I believe the three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are focus, discipline, and attention to detail.

Before becoming an interior designer, I spent a decade in the financial industry. Transitioning to this field required me to pursue further studies, including a master’s program, to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge. This shift reinforced the importance of focus—staying committed to long-term goals despite challenges or distractions. Discipline has been equally critical, especially in managing multiple projects simultaneously. It’s essential to consistently check in on each project and avoid being consumed by isolated issues. Discipline ensures that progress is steady and balanced across all aspects of a project. Finally, attention to detail is where an interior designer truly adds value. Small decisions—like edge detailing, material transitions, or reallocating a few inches between spaces—might seem insignificant but often have a profound impact on the overall design. Clients might not immediately notice these subtleties, but they contribute significantly to the quality and functionality of a space.

For those early in their journey, my advice is to identify and develop qualities that set you apart from your peers. Understand what makes you unique, as clients often appreciate these traits more than you might realize. Stay committed to continuous learning, and always be willing to go the extra mile in honing your skills and attention to detail.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

When I feel overwhelmed, I prioritize self-care strategies that help me regain balance and clarity. Engaging in regular physical activity, such as my favorite golf or gym workouts, allows me to release stress and refocus my mind. Ensuring I get adequate sleep and maintain a nutritious diet also plays a crucial role in my well-being. Quality sleep and proper nutrition are foundational to mental and emotional health, enhancing resilience against stress.
Facing challenges in your best condition is ultimately what you can do to achieve the best outcomes, which helps me approach issues with a clear mind and without regret.
