We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mallory Sailors a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Mallory with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Growing up my I don’t remember a tie when my mom wasn’t a boss lady. Seeing her not only thrive in her work environment but love her job, gave me a strong desire to work for what I want. I come from a long line of entrepreneurs, so I figured one day I would follow in their footsteps. I started going to work with my grandfather when I was just a little girl, he also worked hard to take care of his family. I knew that I could get what I wanted if I just worked hard enough. I started working for the family businesses in highschool on the weekends, I have had many jobs I’ve loved and some I didn’t but Ive never had a problem showing up for work. Now owning my own business doing sometime I absolutely love, I feel like the luckiest girl in the world going to work.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have been in the wedding industry for over 10 years now, and in the beauty industry for close to 15. It took me some time to figure out what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, or a way to make my passion and hobby into a career, but here we are! I started my own business 3 years ago providing hair and makeup services for weddings and special events on the Georgia Coast. While I primarily work weddings, moving here to be a full time makeup artist, I have had some amazing opportunities to work in print ads, on news television, with celebrities, and lots of other fun jobs. I love being a part of the special events in my clients lives, whether I’m doing a pregnant mothers hair and makeup for photos or a bride on her wedding day, I feel honored to have the opportunity to be a part of it. I believe makeup was invented to enhance the natural beauty we all possess Making women feel and look beautiful is a privilege and I am so lucky I get to do it as a job!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The wedding industry is not for everyone. Neither is being a makeup artist. While my job is so fun, it can be very stressful and high pressure. I love continuing to learn, whether its from other artists, vendors, clients or even learning from mistakes I’ve made, I think they all make me better for the future. I think that my loyalty, honesty, and consistency has set me apart and taken me far in an industry that isn’t always looked at as a serious profession. For newcomers in this industry, I’d say suit up and show up, always. Don’t make excuses, noone cares, and be yourself! I’m a walking business card, and luckily people love me, for who I am!
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
I have been working with a business advisor through The University of Georgia for the past year, and wow. I am really good at doing hair and makeup, and entertaining people, but I have learned so much about running a successful business. Somethings make come natural for people, but learning Quickbooks and investing in a booking software has been so helpful. I also recently hired an accountant, also which has helped me so much. I think if you want to know more about something, instead of assuming you know it all, asking a specialist for help has been so beneficial for me in growing an running my own business.
