Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yassin Jamal Adam. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Yassin Jamal, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I pride myself on being a person who pours my heart out into basically everything that I do, but there’s a flip side of that coin where it also tends to be to my own detriment. More specifically in recent days, I’ve found myself in a state of constantly overworking myself to the point of feeling completely burned out – mentally, emotionally, and physically. I’ve begun questioning myself as to whether or not this could be due to me, for some odd reason, wanting my efforts and hard work to be seen or noticed. If so, I need to completely change that mindset. I’m open to the idea that this could be true to an extent, maybe on a subconscious level. Regardless, I just think that I’m naturally a hard-worker. I want to do the best that I could do at any given task, especially when I’m in a professional environment. When I see the end goal or result of something very clearly, especially if it is something that I desire, I work to my best ability, at those given moments, towards it.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
First and foremost, I am an actor. I love the art of storytelling, and I love watching television shows and films. I understand the power, that these mediums in which artists in this specific field use to tell their stories, has. I want to harness it to my best ability and tell stories that are close to me, but more specifically, ones that excite me, and hopefully, also be able to evoke those same emotions from audience members.
I am currently in the pre-production stages of producing my short film titled ‘My Pleasure’, and in the screenplay, I tried my best to underscore the importance of effective communication in relationships, a lesson that is universally applicable. It may also prompt discussions about how to improve communication in personal lives. But ultimately, it is just a light-hearted, comedic short film which I hope is just able to be entertaining for viewers.
I aim to start a fundraiser very soon to raise just enough money to meet our budget. We are very close to launching it, and I am very excited!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Proper training and having a strong foundation is very important. Having enough of an understanding of the business of this job is just as important in many ways. But, persistence and patience is key. A lot of people who are very talented and very smart end up leaving this passion of theirs behind because things didn’t work out at the pace that they would have hoped for. You have to keep your skills sharp and find ways to give yourselves opportunities on your own, and not wait only for people in the industry to give you these shots.
I feel like creatives at any given level tend to work within their own groups. Build your own. Grow with the people around you. Don’t wait for someone to offer you a seat at their table. Create your own. Tell your own stories. That’s what I’m trying my best to do right now, and if things start to take off for me in a year or so from now, that’s probably why.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always looking for creative people to collaborate with. If I watch a movie and I like the camerawork, I find the DP on IMDB pro & see if I can follow them on social media. The same goes for writers and other actors.
I mainly like to keep things local to me, which is in Atlanta, GA, as of right now, but I’ve been talking to friends outside of the country. I met a comedian named Prince Abdi who is Somali and based in London. I’ve shared a few scripts of mine with him. He’s a great comedian and storyteller, overall. I also have a few other friends who are writers. Recently, I’ve been sharing ideas with a friend of mine, Najma Sharif. She’s a Journalist and is dope, as well. We might collaborate on an idea together quite soon..
You can definitely contact me through my website which is now public. I actually just launched it as of the 10th of January (which is today, as of this writing)
I’m open to collaborating with anyone who is likeminded and talented, but most importantly, someone who is willing to learn solely for the sake of getting better and becoming more knowledgable, and because they have a genuine passion. That is my approach.
