Meet Brandi Olson

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brandi Olson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Brandi, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I can remember being about 6-7 years old and walking my “birthday baby” is what I called her- my favorite doll- around my small town in her baby stroller. I know most little girls enjoy playing with dolls, but I really, really loved it and would dream of what it would be like to have my very own baby one day. However, when asked “what do you want to be when you grow up”, I never thought being a “mom” was a real answer… that’s not really a career… right? So I would think instead about being a lawyer, or a doctor, or maybe a teacher. Fast forward to high school and my early college years, I primarily babysat and worked at daycares. As I was nearing adulthood, I knew I wanted to pursue something where I could be around people, kids specifically, and help them. I decided to pursue my Bachelor’s Degree in Health Education and from there, decided to go on to earn my Master’s Degree in School Counseling. I have loved and truly enjoyed working in education. However, I really believe my true purpose blossomed when I became a mom to my first son in 2016. Is it possible to have more than one purpose? At this stage in my life, I believe my highest calling is to be a mom and wife, but I still find so much joy in being a school counselor… and most recently, in being a Photographer.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I currently work part time as a middle school counselor in Devils Lake, ND! On my days I’m not at school, I’m a running my photography business, which I started four years ago. When I decided to give this “photography thing” a real go, I dove in as hard as I could to learn all I could…I invested in mentorships with other amazing photographers so that I could learn about the logistics and details behind working a camera, using light, & shooting at different angles to really become confident in this craft. I took mentorships to learn about how to create a seamless process for my clients, specifically moms, so that their sessions would be relaxed and fun as well as so I could learn how to manage and run a successful business so I could maybe one day take a step back from my 8-4 job and be more present at home with my own family… I’ve learned from several amazing photographers, but the three I must personally thank are Amber Walder, Jesse Salter, and Amanda Highbarger.

I love this “job” and I am so grateful and honored anytime someone chooses me to document their story, their milestone… My absolutely favorite sessions to capture are newborn sessions. There’s something extra special about welcoming a brand new baby to a family. I also offer family sessions, senior sessions, milestone sessions, and boudoir sessions.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Diligence and patience… knowing that I couldn’t just pick up a camera and know all the things and be the best… it’s a journey to figure out the logistics and details, but also your own personal, artistic style.

Attention to detail/organization… there are a lot of moving parts with running a business. It’s imperative to be organized to that your clients feel well taken care of and to ensure the business continues moving in a positive, financially profitable direction.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?

My ideal client is someone who is drawn to the art I create… who sees the value in capturing and preserving some of their most important moments in life…My ideal client is someone I can build authentic connections with and lasting relationships. When I’m chosen to document a maternity session, followed by a newborn session, followed by milestone and family sessions for the client, it’s an absolute honor. Not only do I get to watch these kiddos and families grow and change, but I feel like these clients become friends. The relationships are truly special.

My ideal client is someone who cheers me on and also refers others who might align with my photography style. Someone who trusts my expertise and appreciates the feedback and suggestions I give them. My ideal client is someone who recognizes my passion for this profession and values the time, energy, and investments I’ve made to create a quality experience for them. My ideal client is someone who supports me, understands the struggle of juggling motherhood plus a small business….someone who says thank you.
