We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Siobhan Bodrug a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Siobhan, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I’m an emerging singer-songwriter/recording artist from Toronto, ON. I have had an interest in music since I was a child because my father is a musician/producer and I grew up in a recording studio. As a kid, I would watch recording sessions and be fascinated with the process. But even though music was in my genes, I wasn’t sure where to start when it came to being an artist myself. My own journey started when I was 11 years old. I would play at bars & small festivals in my hometown. Even though I loved performing after the fact, it was a great source of anxiety for me. Every time I would step on a stage, my dad would have to reassure me and tell me everything was okay. This was my first huge obstacle as an artist. But I continuously pushed myself out of my comfort zone because I really wanted it. And I had to believe that my dream could become a reality. I had to believe in myself. Thankfully I had a lot of family support, I was always told I could succeed and make my dreams come true. But what I’ve learned about dreams is that you have to believe in yourself in order to succeed. Fast forward to now at 20 years of age, I have no anxiety when I perform. If anything, it feels like a safe space for me to express myself and connect with others.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am told the three things that make my performances special and captivating is my singing voice is strong, the connection between me and my bandmates, and how people connect with the songs.
We have a lot of new song releases planned for 2025 including my debut album. We are currently planning our second tour across Canada for the summer of 2025.

If you have never heard of this powerhouse singer, you soon will! She is FIRE …Her voice is strong and sure, and she has a very strong command of her craft. She is a brilliant young artist”.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
All of my musical opportunities have come via networking & people skills. A lot of people prioritize education, however in my experience, it is the people you know that is most important. Knowledge can be acquired on the job.
I owe my ability to overcome many of my fears to learning self-awareness. I spent most of my teenage years speaking with an excellent counsellor about the importance of listening to your body and mind.
As a self-employed person, it is my job to create my own opportunities. I do that by creating a detailed daily schedule with tasks, as if I was employed by a company.
Talk to people, ask questions, and learn how they do what they do. Ask for help, and pay attention to how you feel. Act on it. And plan, maintain structure, and always be learning and moving forward.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
The person who has been most helpful to me for overcoming challenges and developing skills is my father. I am very lucky to have someone who supports me, but also understands my craft and how to help me succeed at it. My dad and I are close in our father-daughter relationship but we also have a fantastic working relationship. We co-write songs, produce recordings, and perform live together. It has been this way since I was kid and I wouldn’t have it any other way! Without him I don’t know if I would have known how to nurture these skills. My dad knows me creatively better than anyone. And since my dad has over 30 years in the industry, he has been able to help focus me on what’s important. I also feel like I know how to navigate the industry because my dad has cracked the code for me based on his experience. It’s important to have a mentor – someone that not only understands who you are, but also what you need to do, and how to do it.
