Meet Gabriela Mejia Cervantes

We were lucky to catch up with Gabriela Mejia Cervantes recently and have shared our conversation below.

Gabriela , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

I started playing the guitar when I was 7 years old, but didn’t pursue a career in music until now that I’m 31 years old after getting two degrees, opening various businesses, and married with two children. As a daughter of Mexican immigrant parents I never imagined pursuing a career in the arts was appropriate because my parents were strong advocates of higher education which I’m grateful for because I think its what gave me my purpose. I studied sociology as an undergrad at UCLA and I discovered my passion for culture and human behavior studies. I got my master in social work from USC and have been a medical social worker for 8 years now. Thanks to social work I realized that there was so much music that had yet to be written, especially in the regional mexican genre. I worked with thousands of families and got to see how much we all share in the human experience and in turn, inspired me to write music that I felt was missing. I never imagined that my journey in higher education and experience as a social worker would lead me to find my passion for Mexican music.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

In 2018 I began the process to open Postres Cafe and I realized there was a big need for for female mentorship in the entrepreneurship world. I had already published my first book and was doing public speaking at different high schools sharing my journey as a first-gen college student, but felt that I needed to create a business I could step away from and grow on its own because public speaking required I be present in order for me to make money. I documented my journey on social media and started to grow a following. People kept asking me what the process was like and as a result, I started my mentorship network, Empresaria Society. Empresaria society was created to help other women learn about entrepreneurship and share the resources I picked up along the way and to help them avoid mistakes I made. I began doing workshops and hosted networking events to help other First-Gen college students, business owners, and professionals expand their social capital. What I’m most exited about is that in 2025, I’m making Empresaria Society a nonprofit so we can expand our reach and collaborate with other organizations and have access to funding that can allow us to provide more resources to the community. I am grateful to say that all the different passions I have come together in such a harmonious way that allows me to enjoy everything I do whether it’s running the cafe or hosting events for the community.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The three most important skills are emotional intelligence, adaptability, and being resourceful. Having emotional intelligence will make help you survive in any environment and bring out the best in others. Being adaptable is a must! Life is full of challenges and obstacles that require you become solution-oriented and adapt to the circumstances. Lastly, being resourceful is key. If you know how to capitalize off of your skillset you can expand whatever it is you have; money, time, or raw materials. Knowing how to make more of whatever it is you have will always be a good skill to have.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

I take care of myself as much as I can. When you’re pursing any goals it’s important that you take care of your mind and body. How are we going to set goals for ourselves if we aren’t taking the appropriate vitamins, drinking enough water, sleeping 8 hours? We have to give our bodies a fighting chance! I have incorporated things like hiking, meditating, and reading to help my mental health and do my best to listen to my body. There’s no point in working arduously towards any goals if you don’t make it to see them become a reality.
