We recently connected with Bill Davis Jr. and have shared our conversation below.
Bill, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I like to think I get my resilence from my mother Sandra Robicheaux. She has always been a go-getter and instilled that within me though out my entire life and even until this day. Watching her pick herself up from failures, which we call them lessons, learning from them, and making the best out of any situation has always been something I’ve stood by.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Well, last time you all interviewed me, I had just opened my own to-go restaurant in Houston but I switched gear and focused on private events and corporate catering events which has allowed for me to still work using my degree in Human Resource and Development as an HR Director for The Good News Staffing Agency started by my mom. I’ve focused a lot on my catering now and I getting 10-20 gigs per month which is a great source of income without so much over head. I’ve been booked for couple dinners and growing into providing services for weddings in the future which I’m extremely excited about.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Patience, Resilience, and Research. I stated patience because I know that me moving to fast has cost me somewhat of a downfall in my business. If I wasn’t so eager to move to the next level things would be a lot different. Now I am able to look back and say I won’t do that again so fast, this could have waited if that makes sense. This leads to having resilience because when things don’t go as plan, people tend to give up so quickly, but I’ve learned the most successful people had some huge hick ups along the way. If they had stopped we wouldn’t know who they were today. Like 50 cent is one of my favorite exams, less than a decade ago he filed for bankruptcy, and now he’s one of the biggest television producers in the world with dozens of shows. Lastly, I say research in whatever business you plan on getting yourself into. The world is constantly revolving and thankfully everything is a Google search away. Take time and plan out your next steps, and what you will do if Plan A or B or C doesn’t workout. See what your competitors are doing, what’s working, what’s not working. Learn from it and apply it to your own business. You are never too old or young to educate yourself on things you are passionate about.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes I am. I just don’t know where to start, however I’m open and ready to work. I’m kind of shy so it’s hard for me to take the initiative but that’s something that I’m slowly getting better at every single day. I want to get into making cooking tutorials, educational videos, and fun cooking skits. Different things like that.
