We recently connected with Destiny Foreman and have shared our conversation below.
Destiny, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
My purpose found me through life’s twists and turns. Growing up, I was always surrounded by culture, creativity, and the beauty of tradition, but I didn’t fully understand how those things could become my calling.
After working in corporate America, I realized I was chasing stability but not fulfillment. It wasn’t until I started reflecting on my love for African art, culture, and handmade goods that I discovered a way to connect my passions to my purpose. To Live A Colorful Life became my way of celebrating African heritage and sharing it with others through curated, vibrant, Afrocentric pieces that bring joy and tell meaningful stories.
Finding my purpose wasn’t a single moment but a series of small steps: listening to my inner voice, honoring my roots, and deciding to live boldly and authentically. Now, through my brand, I hope to inspire others to embrace the richness and vibrancy of culture in their own lives.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
To Live A Colorful Life is an Afrocentric lifestyle and home decor brand that celebrates the beauty, richness, and resilience of African culture. Through our curated collection of jewelry, home goods, and accessories, we aim to bring vibrant, meaningful pieces into people’s lives while creating a connection to tradition and storytelling.
What truly sets us apart is our commitment to authenticity and collaboration. We’re passionate about working with talented artisans who bring their craft and creativity to life. This year, we’re thrilled to be expanding our partnerships with more artisans across the African diaspora, allowing us to share even more diverse and unique creations with our community.
One of the most exciting projects we’re working on is the launch of a limited-edition ring collection to honor Black History Month and Juneteenth. These pieces are more than jewelry—they’re a tribute to history, culture, and the power of storytelling through art.
We’re also gearing up for an incredible year of growth by participating in major festivals like Essence Festival and Odunde, which give us the opportunity to meet new customers, connect with fellow creatives, and continue sharing our mission of celebrating culture and living boldly.
Thank you for allowing me to share my journey with To Live A Colorful Life. I’m so excited for what’s ahead and for the chance to connect with even more people who value the beauty of culture and artistry!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three most important qualities that have shaped my journey are resilience, authenticity, and a willingness to learn.
1. Resilience:
Building something meaningful takes time, and the road isn’t always smooth. There have been moments of doubt, setbacks, and challenges, but I’ve learned to keep going and trust the process. For anyone starting out, my advice is to stay focused on your “why” and let that guide you through difficult times.
2. Authenticity:
Staying true to who I am and the vision of To Live A Colorful Life has been essential. People connect with honesty and passion, and I’ve found that when I show up authentically—through my brand’s storytelling, product curation, and mission—it resonates with my audience. For others, my advice is to lean into what makes you unique. That’s your greatest strength.
3. Willingness to Learn:
I didn’t have all the answers when I started, and I still don’t, but I’ve learned to embrace the journey of growth. Whether it’s figuring out marketing, building partnerships, or improving operations, being open to learning has been key. My advice: don’t be afraid to ask questions, seek mentorship, and adapt as you go.
Ultimately, I believe success comes from embracing your passion, staying determined, and always being open to evolving. Every step is a lesson, and every lesson brings you closer to your goals.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My family has been the most important source of support throughout this journey, especially my mom. She’s been my rock, always encouraging me to keep going, even when things felt overwhelming. Her belief in me and her constant prayers have given me the strength to push forward.
I’m also deeply grateful for the artisans I’ve worked with. Their words of encouragement, their prayers, and their shared resilience have meant so much to me, especially during tough times. 2024 was our hardest year yet, but knowing I had their support reminded me why I do this and kept me motivated to keep building To Live A Colorful Life.
The combination of resilience, family, and a community of supportive artisans has been a blessing, and I’m truly thankful for every encouraging word and prayer that has carried me through.
