Meet Nicholas Tanek

We recently connected with Nicholas Tanek and have shared our conversation below.

Nicholas, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?

My optimism comes from kink. Sexual expression, BDSM, and kink culture shows me (every day) that change is the only constant. Kink takes something and changes it so people can view it differently. We “kink” things in everyday life. That means we all have the power to change something. We can change our outlook. We can change our way of thinking. Therefore, we can change the world for the better.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Nicholas Tanek is an author, speaker, and podcaster. Recently, a survivor of a liver transplant, he is best known for his memoir, “The Coolest Way to Kill Yourself,” which chronicles his experiences as a young man in the NYC rave/punk rock, and BDSM subcultures of the 1990s. The book has been praised for its honesty and rawness in depicting Tanek’s struggles with addiction, depression, and unconventional sexuality.

Tanek has also written several other books, including “Chipped Black Nail Polish,” a collection of short stories about life on the fringes of society, and “Your Kinky Friends,” a non-fiction book about alternative lifestyles and sexual practices. He hosts a podcast by the same name, in which he interviews people involved in BDSM, kink, and other alternative lifestyles.

In addition to his writing and podcasting, Tanek is a frequent speaker at events and conferences, where he discusses topics related to alternative lifestyles, mental health, and addiction recovery.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Be cool..
Be kind.
Keep an open mind.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

YKF: Your Kinky Friends is all about connection and collaboration. When I was trying to survive a liver transplant, I had a fantasy that I would fall in love, write books, and start a podcast network. I want to create a network for kinky activists, comedians, artists, authors, musicians, and more!
