We recently connected with Shantelle Rodriguez and have shared our conversation below.
Shantelle, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
My confidence comes from constantly learning and taking classes. It takes years of experience. Honestly sometimes I still have self doubt and sometimes my confidence is low if it’s a big client or job that I really admire and want to impress. For example there was a photographer who I admired her work just last year, Linda Leyva. I had been following her through social media and loved her work. She needed a head MUA/ hairstylist for her clients. She offered me a trial shoot to see if we vibed and how my work was in person. I was so nervous because I really respected her and thought this would be a great opportunity for me to grow in my work, turns out we were a match.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a Bridal and event Makeup artist and hairstylist. I aim to achieve the best experience possible for my clients. I take pride in my work as I’m a professional and a profectionist. I do my best to achieve my clients expectations by listening to their needs and concerns.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Always remember to learn. Continue to invest in yourself by taking clients. When I first started I practiced on different faces for free and eventually started charging for very cheap. Once I built my confidence and critiqued my skill I started charging more accordingly. Always have patience and grace with yourself. Never give up on your dreams. Practice makes perfect.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed I have to check myself. I usually go for a self care day, talk it out with a friend who is also in my industry and I pray for peace and guidance. I pray that my journey takes me where I need to be. I have to trust the Lord.
