Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Anethe Okutubo and Nadine Malomar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Anethe and Nadine with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
As sisters, we’ve had the same examples of work ethic our whole lives. Our Dad is someone who, despite his highly demanding job, will ensure that every single project he is involved in receives the same dedication and attention to detail.
One example was in 2022 when he managed to conclude his doctorate, write a book, and still work.
He always tells us the importance of continually learning and developing skills regardless of where we are in our careers. With our brand, he has been our biggest supporter allowing us to run our ideas by him in order to improve the brand.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
The name Nanura resonates with profound significance. Originating from our maternal language of Mankanya in Guinea-Bissau, it embodies the essence of ‘beautiful women’ or ‘a group of beautiful women.’ This nomenclature is not merely a title; it is a celebration of femininity, a tribute to the myriad forms of beauty that grace our world.
We are two sisters born in Guinea-Bissau, raised in Portugal, who now live in the UK. Our business dreams finally materialised in 2020 during the Covid pandemic when we felt like we finally had the headspace and finances to begin planning our brand. We are known for excellence, whether is products or marketing we make sure we go above and beyond to ensure our customers are purchasing from a luxury brand.
We are both married and mums, which makes navigating the business world (while working our 9-5’s ) ever so challenging. But we are incredibly passionate about our brand and the vision regarding our final destination is very clear.
At Nanura, we are unwavering in our commitment to enhancing beauty and instilling confidence through our meticulously curated selection of premium quality lashes and wig products. Each item is crafted with an artistry that transcends the ordinary, designed to elevate the wearer’s allure and empower individuals to express their unique style and personality with grace and sophistication.
2025 brought us some exciting news. We are going to start offering our products on Amazon which will hopefully provide us bigger exposure to a more global audience. We are also selling on TikTok and working hard to master that space, which is allowing us to connect with customers in a new way.
Our mission extends beyond the mere provision of products; it is a heartfelt endeavour to deliver exceptional customer service that resonates with the values of respect and understanding.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
For us, we always say that we are a match made in heaven.
One of us, Anethe, is a CRM Manager with a general Marketing background so in terms of brand identity, website creation, asset creation, social media, packaging, etc. that’s taken care of.
The other, Nadine, has a Business Management background so when it comes to suppliers, budgets, pricing, logistics, etc. she takes care of that. This is something that saves from having to outsource all that work and also allows us to have exactly what we incision.
Our advice to anyone starting a business is to first understand what they are good at outside the products they want to sell. Those skills will save you a lot of money and will also allow you to truly know your business and ensure a standard of quality from top to bottom.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
This is a perfect question for us since we just rebranded. The past year, 2024, was one of humility. Humility to understand that we had before did not have longevity and it was time to move on to something scalable and more fitting with the current brand.
We worked with a designer to change our logo and colours, we also relaunched our new website and completely changed the design we had before. We decided to grow the team and understand is ok to ask for help.
Finally, we decided that we should be more present on our social channels, which previously was not the case, to allow our customers and supporters to better connect with us. We understand that people want to trust the people behind the brand before purchasing so that was an inevitable decision.
