Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Farrah Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Farrah, thank you so much for joining us today. There are so many topics we could discuss, but perhaps one of the most relevant is empathy because it’s at the core of great leadership and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your empathy?
First off, I come from very humble beginnings. My family did not have much in the way of finances, but love was the glue that bonded us together. While socio-economic status presented challenges in and of itself, those experiences laid the groundwork for my empathetic nature today. As time progressed, I began to see beyond my circumstances to realize that many people around me were experiencing hardships and lacked support. At that point, I was convinced that helping people was my calling – through advocacy, social support, or mental health care. My heart softened and my eyes opened in such a way that I could not turn back, nor did I want to do so.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
When reflecting on my life experiences, the three most impactful skills and areas of knowledge include the following:
1. Client-oriented: Throughout my journey, I understand the importance of focusing on the needs of the client, not on the numbers. My passion for helping people has helped me serve clients in a remarkably effective way.
2. Integrity: As one of my core values, this quality has allowed me to consistently act with a high degree of professionalism, honesty, and accountability. When you operate in this manner, you build trust amongst colleagues and your clients respectfully. Hence, I am so grateful to be recognized as someone whom people can count on to show up and make good decisions, especially in the face of adversity.
3. Team-player: While I am good at working independently, I have discovered that success in my profession is connected to my ability to work well with others. Expressing my thoughts, while collaborating with others on their ideas, has proven effective in meeting overall professional goals.
The advice that I can offer someone early in their journey is to be authentic, while being open to change. Success is contingent upon you and typically involves having a growth mindset.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Although it is rare nowadays, when I am feeling overwhelmed, I take a break then turn to a relaxation technique, (or self-soothing) depending on the day. My go-to technique is to take a walk in nature. This is something I suggest to clients also, especially those with depression. The vitamin D from the sun can really help to boost moods! Nature walks cover several areas of wellness: spiritual, physical, and mental, so it works well for me. I talk to God about things on my mind while finding joy in watching the birds, flowers, and other things around me.
Other effective strategies include deep breathing, coloring, and journaling. When you are intentional, you can apply these strategies and improve your overall wellness one step at a time.
