We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kathy Weyer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kathy below.
Hi Kathy, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Life experiences:
I was a young professional in the early seventies; what we dealt with in retrospect seems huge, but at the time it just felt like we did what we could. If we were uncomfortable, we left a job and gave ourselves a promotion and a raise because staying in the same job either meant to put up with harrassment or get fired for being uncooperative.
I married a divorced man with three children I had never met and inherited them shortly after I was married. They were 9, 11, and 13. It was tough, but we all grew in a positive way and forty-five years later still enjoy family celebrations together with grandchildren and spouses.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am the author of four books in a planned series of six that take place in the real San Diego Heritage Park. I’ve turned the six Victorian houses into an art colony for my books, each owned by a woman during mid-life when big chages, whether planned or not, occur. Each house is devoted to one particular form of art – needlework, painting, writing, and jewelry making so far. Each book is also featuring a social issue I feel passionate about – grief/bereavement and self identity when you lose a partner, the foster system, domestic violence, and mental health each are featured in each book. The stories that go along with the issue explore feelings and relationships among a group of women who band together to support and help each other through these life changes. There is nothing quite so sure as change.
My artwork is important to me; I work with watercolors and have won some awards. I also sew, knit, draw, cook, and write short stories. My life has gone from buttoned-down corporate work to a very loose, relaxed creative life.
My mission in life is to raise the bar for civility in our world. I will not normalize bad behavior and instead will call it out politely, and encourage others to do the same.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Common sense
Psychology training
A good, well-rounded education
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
My number one obstacle is marketing for my books, and I am not alone in this. I have hired several PR people, spent a ton of money, but have not seen much of an impact. I suspect there are too many people writing these days and the field is overcrowded. Social Media is a cesspool of misinformation and my messages are lost. I think I would rather speak to people personally than put words on a screen that my readers just won’t see.
