Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Flintheartbabi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Flintheartbabi, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
From what I can remember, I don’t think there’s ever been a moment where my drive to move forward, despite the odds, suddenly spiked or clearly came into being. It’s always naturally been a part of me that pushes to battle what’s in front without looking back in the middle of it. As an artist, I feel it’s necessary to understand resilience and know when to be proud of it, harness it, and acknowledge it. Every day, I do whatever I can to progress toward my end goals. Giving up or stopping at any of the hurdles wouldn’t have shaped me or the art I’m so proud of. My resilience isn’t something I’ve built as a habit but more of an instinct.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is flintheartbabi. Though music is my main focus, I’m an artist across many mediums and work to grow my skill set often. I have an unfortunate but absolute passion for perfection, so my discography remains small but speaks heavily to what I’m capable of. I originally went by the name lxstjericho, and during that time, had a viral song called “Stiff Arm” that landed me a short-lived record deal. That experience completely changed my understanding of the music industry and inspired a new alias and image.
My sound isn’t confined to any one genre, but artists like 070 Shake, Jean Dawson, Oklou, and Imogen Heap heavily influence me. Most of my production is handled by my friend Enuar, for which I’m forever grateful. I’m currently locked into the process of building a project and hope to release a lot more music very soon.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I believe it’s crucial to know yourself and understand what you truly want out of the things you pursue. It’s easy to fall into doubt and hit obstacles when your focus is on what others expect from you or the position you play. To combat this, I make it a point to pay close attention to my initial feelings and ideas, even if they can be a bit extreme at times. Resilience is another key quality that’s been incredibly useful, as it helps prevent any hesitation or second-guessing when I’m on the paths I choose. Keeping your eyes on what’s ahead and pushing forward at all costs is, in my opinion, one of the best ways to approach a challenge.
From a musician’s perspective, simply trying new things has been invaluable for my progress. The fear and procrastination that come with stepping into anything are natural, but I make an effort to work against it. Anything new has the potential to open your mind to ideas you haven’t yet considered, which could help you move from step one to step two. New conversations, new food, new places, and new music all offer opportunities to gain fresh perspectives that can aid in your journey.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
As far as obstacles go, I think my biggest one at the moment might actually be myself. I stay busy, but I don’t ease up or allow myself the space to truly relax. Lately, I’ve been trying to break away from that routine, though I know it’ll take time before I can fully pull it off. A lot of the challenge comes from self-doubt. To power through, I’ve been practicing production, watching, and listening to new things. In time, I’m sure I’ll find a way to complete what I need to without feeling like the finish line is so far or awkward to reach.
