Meet Lauren Simon

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lauren Simon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lauren below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Lauren with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I was thinking about this recently, how I came to start my own business and basically put all free hours of my day and night into it. My dad started his own business when I was one year old, and that business is still up and running. He always had a pride and passion for what he built, and even started a second business in book-keeping later in life. My younger brother also has his own business, and looking back, I realized I’ve always had this entrepreneurial/creative streak.

When I was 8 or 9 years old, I used to make bracelets with beads and rubber bands and “sell” them to my brother. I started two separate magazines, in middle school and then in high school. The first one, my best friend and I actually went around the neighborhood “delivering” them to our friends. I also had a baking tumblr account in the early 2010’s that gained hundreds of thousands of followers (if only those accounts were monetizable back then!), and I attempted to sell baked goods through Etsy a short while later.

I always thought of myself, ironically, as someone who was not motivated to have a career – I always worked hard and wanted to succeed in whatever job I held, but I never felt I had a passion for anything. It was always just because I “had” to. And now with Little Pink Bow Parties, I honestly LOVE what I do! It’s more of an art than a business.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Little Pink Bow Parties is so special to me because it really is a creative outlet. I get so excited about every single event and theme that clients present me with, and it’s so much fun figuring out how to bring the designs to life.

When I first started the business, I was focusing mainly on balloon arches and garlands. It quickly grew into incorporating event planning and floral design. Now I am really excited to say we have been breaking into the wedding industry as well, with custom large scale seating charts and builds. I’ve had so much fun pushing the barriers and learning new skills, and I know we will continue to grow and scale the business! The sky’s the limit, really. As long as a client has the budget and trusts us with their vision, we will continue to add new facets to the business.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I think I have a level of confidence and optimism that most people don’t – I think that has to do with being an Aries, of course (LOL) but also my parents raised us to always believe in ourselves and work hard. I never really questioned that I was able to achieve something, but also was okay with my shortcomings in certain areas. For years before I started the company, I loved doing parties for myself and friends, so once I began Little Pink Bow, I knew I was good at that. I’m also optimistic but realistic enough to keep reminding myself there will be setbacks! So:

1. be confident
2. be optimistic (but realistic)
3. know your value in the field!

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

My husband Josh always brings me back down to earth at moments where I’m doubting myself or questioning my success. I think just having someone in your corner who will tell you that what you’re going through with growth is totally normal is so valuable. Otherwise it may be easy to believe you’re failing.

He also has been growing with me in the business; he is now a self-taught carpenter/builder! Without him so many of our designs would not be possible. Alot of the time I come to him with an idea and then I’m the one talking him into believing it can be done! And it always is.
