We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shaun Harris a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shaun, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Growing up in poverty, survival becomes second nature from a young age. When you’re conditioned to navigate hardship, the prospect of upward mobility often feels distant, yet it grants you a profound understanding of resilience. You learn not only how to endure when you hit rock bottom, but also how to rise again. This is why those with the least often dare to dream the biggest. The secret to my success lies in the ability to persist—even after surrendering to despair—finding the strength to rise once more and press forward, no matter the odds.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am an MC, specializing in Hip-Hop and Drum N’ Bass, driven by a profound passion for words. The power to manipulate language and express myself freely through rhyme is what truly sets my craft apart. Beyond the mic, I am also a published poet with a chapbook and a dedicated spoken word artist. In 2025, I’m set to release a groundbreaking album, Writer’s Block on the Wall, produced by the legendary Grimey L. This project is a creative exploration of overcoming writer’s block, pushing past limitations, and embracing the joy of lyrical expression. My music and poetry are more than just art; they’re a testament to the power of resilience and the limitless potential of language.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
For me, the three pillars of growth are reading, writing, and repetition. My advice to anyone pursuing music is simple yet profound: never forget why you started in the first place. The essence of music lies in its joy—the fun, the freedom, the expression. When that joy fades and it becomes nothing more than work, you risk losing your passion and walking away. I’ve experienced this myself. Remember, it’s the love for the craft that sustains you through the toughest times, and it’s that love that keeps the journey alive.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My marketing ability and Lyricism
