Meet Tommy Kavounidis

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tommy Kavounidis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Tommy, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my purpose looking back at history and revisiting my old instrument that first brought me really joy to music. The Greek Bouzouki, that was the first instrument that brought me really joy to music and it’s the instrument that brings me joy to music today. Historically the Bouzouki was an instrument that wasn’t allowed to be played for political reasons and depending and what notes you played could land you in jail. So because of that and how far the Bouzouki has come I look to take it to the next level.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m Tommy Kavounidis, a passionate musician and the founder of Ta Pedia Tis Polis, a New York-based Rebetiko band that brings the soul of Greek music to life. Our band is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich heritage of Rebetiko and other traditional Greek styles through captivating performances and immersive experiences. Whether we’re performing at festivals, private events, or cultural gatherings, our goal is to create a vibrant and authentic atmosphere that resonates with audiences of all backgrounds.

What excites me most about what we do is the unique connection we build with our listeners. Rebetiko has a raw, emotional power that speaks to life’s highs and lows, and sharing that with others is incredibly fulfilling. Our performances are more than just music; they’re a celebration of history, culture, and community.

Recently, I’ve expanded my efforts by launching initiatives like the NYC Bouzouki School, where I teach group and private bouzouki lessons to help keep this art form alive. We’re also working on releasing new content, including live recordings and video projects, to reach a broader audience. Additionally, our band is preparing for some exciting events, including performances and workshops during a summer trip to Greece.

We’re passionate about what we do, and whether it’s through live music, teaching, or community events, we’re committed to spreading the joy and depth of Greek culture to as many people as possible.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey, I’d say the three most impactful qualities and skills were:

1. Passion for the Craft
My deep love for music and Greek culture has been the driving force behind everything I do. It’s not just about playing an instrument or leading a band—it’s about connecting with history, telling stories, and creating meaningful experiences for others. My advice: Find what genuinely excites you and dive deep into it. Passion sustains you through challenges and helps you build something authentic.

2. Adaptability and Learning
From mastering new instruments to understanding sound engineering and lighting, being open to learning new skills has allowed me to grow creatively and professionally. Whether it’s exploring modern technologies or traditional techniques, staying adaptable keeps your work fresh and relevant. For those early in their journey: Be curious and proactive about learning. Seek mentors, take classes, and don’t shy away from stepping outside your comfort zone.

3. Relationship Building
Music and art thrive on connection—whether with collaborators, clients, or audiences. Building genuine relationships has been key to my band’s growth and success. It’s not just about networking but about fostering trust, mutual respect, and shared vision. My advice: Be present, communicate openly, and invest in the people around you. These connections will support and inspire you as you grow.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Several people have played a significant role in helping me overcome challenges and build the skills I needed to succeed.

First and foremost, my family has been incredibly supportive throughout my journey, encouraging my passion for music and culture from a young age. Their belief in me has been a constant source of motivation.

My mentors and teachers have also been instrumental. Whether it was learning the intricacies of bouzouki or navigating the complexities of leading a band, their guidance and expertise have shaped my understanding of both the art and the business side of music.

Lastly, my bandmates in Ta Pedia Tis Polis have been invaluable. Working with such talented, dedicated individuals pushes me to continually improve. The collaboration and shared vision we have inspire me every day.

For anyone starting out, I recommend surrounding yourself with people who challenge, support, and inspire you. Find mentors, build a strong network, and never underestimate the importance of a team that shares your passion and values.
