We recently connected with Memo Ortega and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Memo with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic stems from a deep connection to the communities and cultures that inspire my art. Chicano culture, the streets of Los Angeles, and the traditions of Mexico, I saw how dedication and creativity could transform challenges into opportunities. Photography became my way of capturing the raw, authentic beauty of these influences, and I’ve carried that passion into every aspect of my work.
As a photographer, I’ve developed a habit of immersing myself fully in my projects. Whether I’m documenting the bold lines of a lowrider, the intricate details of a tattoo, or the expressive faces in my ELLAS series, I approach each shot with intention and respect. Every frame tells a story, and it’s my responsibility to honor it with my best work.
My work ethic is also fueled by a commitment to continuous learning. Building my brand has required mastering not just photography but also web design, social media, and even production for my wear collection. Every step has taught me that persistence and adaptability are as important as talent.
Ultimately, my work ethic is about gratitude—gratitude to the culture that inspires me, the people who trust me to tell their stories, and the challenges that push me to grow. This mindset keeps me motivated to create work that’s not just visually striking but also meaningful.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My journey as an artist is rooted in storytelling—capturing the essence of Chicano culture, the vibrant streets of Los Angeles, and the bold energy of the communities I’ve been shaped by. Through photography, design, and media, I aim to create work that resonates not just visually but emotionally. Whether it’s a lowrider gleaming under California sunlight or the powerful expressions in my ELLAS series, my art is a reflection of the culture and spirit that inspire me daily.
What sets my work apart is its authenticity. Every image, every project, is deeply connected to the people, traditions, and moments that make up our shared experience. My photography has become iconic in spaces like tattoo shops, car hoods, and street murals, evolving into a lifestyle brand that spans multiple forms of media—web content, fashion, and now even music and product design.
Looking ahead to 2025, I’m excited to expand my creative horizons. I’m currently working on a book that will blend my photography with stories from the culture I document, offering a deeper look into my journey and the lives of the people I’ve worked with. I’m also stepping into new creative territories with a shoe line, a music project, and the launch of a cannabis brand—all of which will reflect the same authenticity and connection that define my work.
These projects are more than just products—they’re extensions of the lifestyle and values my brand represents. I’m also building “The Plug,” a curated resource for everyday business essentials, and continuing to grow my wear collection, ensuring that everything I create remains accessible and meaningful.
Ultimately, my focus is on creating work that inspires and gives back to the culture that has given me so much. I want people to see my art as a celebration of resilience, creativity, and community, and I’m excited to bring even more to the table in 2025 and beyond.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been staying OG real, discipline, and pride. Being real means staying true to yourself and your roots—never losing sight of where you come from or what matters most. Discipline is about showing up every day, even when it’s hard, and putting in the work to elevate your craft. Pride ties it all together—taking pride in what you do and the story you’re telling through your work.
For those starting out, my advice is simple: stay grounded, stay consistent, and never let anyone make you doubt your worth. Keep building, stay focused, and trust the process.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
