We were lucky to catch up with Jasmine Ramos recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmine, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
My generosity is deeply rooted in the love, lessons, and challenges I experienced growing up. My mother was the embodiment of selflessness, always helping others by offering food, money, or emotional support. She gave freely, even when others didn’t treat her kindly, and her quiet acts of kindness left an indelible mark on me. My Abuela reinforced this legacy by donating to children in need from other countries—the ones we’d see on TV who were homeless or hungry. Their examples taught me that generosity is a way of life, a natural extension of love.
Life itself also played a pivotal role in shaping my understanding of giving. Someone close to me, struggling with addiction, often took things I valued—gifts, school supplies, items I cherished—to feed their habit. While this could have made me bitter, it taught me a profound lesson: nothing in life is permanent. I began to see that some people need things more than I do, and instead of clinging to possessions, I chose to let go with grace. Through this, I realized that people are not inherently bad but often act out of pain or longing.
Generosity, for me, isn’t about material things; it’s about pouring out love, understanding, and light into the world. It’s a way of saying, “I see you, and I care,” because we’re all connected. What I give, I receive in return, not in the form of possessions but in the joy, connection, and humanity that flow back to me. Giving is my way of creating beauty in a world that’s always moving, always changing—a brushstroke of love on someone else’s canvas.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m the founder of Somar Luna Je, a holistic wellness business that blends spirituality, creativity, and physical discipline to nurture the mind, body, and spirit. Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that have truly shaped my journey are emotional intelligence and empathy, a holistic approach to wellness, and a good dose of creativity and innovation. My ability to tune into others’ emotions comes from a deep-rooted sense of understanding and connection, something I’ve nurtured from childhood. It’s what helps me show up with compassion and intuition in everything I do. My holistic view of life—seeing the mind, body, and spirit as one interconnected system—lets me create experiences that bring true balance and healing. And, of course, creativity has been my constant companion, helping me blend art, spirituality, and wellness into something uniquely transformative for others.
For those just starting on this journey, my advice is to first get to know yourself—really understand what makes you tick, what emotions arise, and how they connect to those around you. Dive deep into your feelings, reflect often, and listen with intention. In wellness, don’t rush—explore each practice and trust your intuition to lead the way. There’s no blueprint, just an unfolding of what resonates with you. And for creativity? Don’t hold back. Whether you’re painting a picture, coming up with a new wellness approach, or weaving together ideas, allow yourself to play, explore, and take risks. It’s through experimentation that the magic happens—and your journey will be all the richer for it.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I’ve learned to pause and focus on my breath. I stop, take a deep inhale, and let it out slowly, reconnecting with the present moment. Finding stillness and consciously breathing helps me regain clarity, even in the most chaotic of situations. It’s like pressing the reset button for my mind and body. Our breath is powerful—did you know that deep, intentional breathing can lower stress levels and increase oxygen flow to the brain, helping to clear mental fog? I remind myself that feeling overwhelmed is just my body’s way of telling me to slow down, take a step back, and recalibrate.
In the past, I used to experience panic attacks often, and it was during those intense moments that breathing became my anchor, helping me calm down and find my center. Dance, too, has always been my go-to for releasing that pent-up energy—moving through the overwhelm by actively engaging with the energy rushing through me. Writing has been equally transformative, allowing me to release the constant stream of thoughts onto paper and find clarity in the process. It’s like a mental detox, clearing space for new perspectives. When I take the time to breathe, dance, or write, I’m able to bring myself back to a place of peace, allowing me to move forward with more grace and intention.
For others feeling overwhelmed, I would say: Start by giving yourself permission to pause. It’s okay to take a moment. Practice deep breathing—inhale slowly through your nose, hold for a moment, and exhale through your mouth. This simple practice can work wonders. If you’re feeling restless, try using movement, like dance or stretching, to release the energy in your body. It helps to shift your focus and reconnect with the present moment. If your thoughts are running wild, try journaling. Write whatever comes to mind, without judgment, and see what clarity emerges. Another helpful strategy is grounding techniques—stand or sit firmly, place your feet flat on the ground, and focus on the sensations in your body. This can help pull you out of your head and back into your body, creating a sense of stability.
If you’re in a situation where you’re physically unable to move or step away, use positive affirmations. Remind yourself, “I am in control,” or “ This is temporary, and it will pass.” Sometimes, repeating a simple phrase can reset your mindset and ease the tension. Another method that’s been invaluable is visualization. Picture yourself in a peaceful, calming place—whether it’s a beach, a forest, or a cozy room—and let your mind linger there for a few moments. You’d be surprised at how much a mental escape can refresh your spirit. Lastly, don’t forget the power of self-care. When things feel heavy, do something nourishing for yourself—whether it’s taking a warm bath, reading a book, or sipping a cup of herbal tea. You deserve those moments of peace, and they will help you reset.
Remember, you don’t have to have everything figured out at once. Small steps, deep breaths, and giving yourself grace are all part of the journey. You’ve got this!
