Meet Kari Elizabeth Enge

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kari Elizabeth Enge. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kari Elizabeth below.

Hi Kari Elizabeth, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

First of all, it’s important from a neuroscience-perspective to understand what confidence actually is.

Confidence doesn’t come ahead of time. It comes from actually doing something until you develop a skill set and a certain level of mastery. For example, I have sat in a chair many times and now I am “confident” at doing it.

When you are confident, you don’t get a warm-fuzzy “confident” feeling. You just start automatically doing the task without thinking about it because you are confident. You focus your attention elsewhere.

In order to build confidence (aka – the skillset to do the task), you have to go through a season of commitment and courage. And this doesn’t always feel good as you practice a new skill set and fail.

Self-esteem on the other hand is something that you can have 100% of the time, before you have confidence. Self-esteem is what helps you go through the season of commitment and courage because you have your back and support yourself even when you feel unsure, and are failing as you practice.

So I would say it comes down to this: focus first on self-esteem and commit to the skill sets you want to learn. Forget feeling “confident.” It will come automatically later on. Since self- esteem is a choice. You can make a choice to support yourself right now. They way you form self-esteem is CHOOSING to believe in yourself no matter what, and choosing to have your back (no matter what).

It has nothing to do with competence, skill level, success, or anything else. It’s just the relationship that you have with yourself.

The best way to form self-belief, a new skill set, and ultimately confidence, is by working with a coach. This is what we do at The Do Business Better School every day. We help founders get clear on the best strategies to grow their businesses, help them make a plan of attack to learn it, and teach them to lean on their self-trust and tools as they go through the season of commitment and courage.

The business growth and “confidence” are fun by-products of this process.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m an American social impact founder who has grown two companies over the last 8 years both in the USA and Europe.

I’m on a mission to help 1 million purpose-driven founders graduate from outdated, old-school motivation and goal-achievement techniques by arming them with the latest neuroscience and trauma-informed coaching tools. Because the more purpose-driven founders who achieve success in a sustainable way, the more we can make the world a better place!

I’m the founder of The Do Business Better School. our Founder Growth System is a 4-step process that blends together the latest neuroscience with tried-and-true Lean Startup concepts. This System speeds up growth while cutting founder stress in half or more.

I am no stranger to complex environments and challenging projects. I have traveled to over 35 countries and worked with founders from more than 40 nationalities. I love achieving big goals without compromising my health, wellbeing, or time with my two young kids. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Here are hands-down, the three most important skill sets for founders:

1. Mindset and Nervous System Coaching Tools – the skill set of being able to stay calm, grounded, objective, focused, and patient (no matter what!) has made the biggest impact in my ability to believe in myself and move the needle on my business goals each month. This is why mindset and nervous system tools are now a part of the Growth System we teach founders.

2. Marketing and Selling – obviously, VERY important for anyone who wants to compel, lead and/or sell something to people. Unfortunately, most founders lack these skill sets because they try to “hack” their way to success with tips and tricks. Marketing and selling well starts with believing in what you sell. If you have insecurities, they will bleed through. Once you truly belief in yourself and in your product/service, you must learn the mental and emotional skill set of building trust and compelling people to take action. Again, this is mostly mental.

3. Business Tools/Frameworks to apply #1 and #2 together in a data-driven, organized way. Most founders are like splattered paint on the wall with their marketing efforts, and they just don’t know it. Marketing is just testing different messages with your audience, which means you need a system to help organize your tests.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

10x is Easier Than 2x – A must-read for any entrepreneur or founder. The premise is, that 10xing your goal is actually easier than 2xing it.

It helps you go bigger while simplifying. This concept has since then become one of the foundations of my Simply Sustainable Growth System for founders.
