We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful The Soda Shop Movement Company. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with The Soda Shop Movement Company below.
Hi The Soda Shop Movement Company, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
We both feel that if there’s something you want in the world that doesn’t exist, it’s up to you to bring it into existence. As much as we love the ballet classics, both of us feel that the art of moving has a place in the 21st century, and we wish to amplify the kinds of stories that are more representative of the world we live in today.
As scary (and risky) as it is to start a professional dance company from scratch, dancers are quite used to navigating these kinds of challenges. The business of being a professional dancer is nothing but risk. We risk our bodies every time we step into the studio or on the stage, not to mention that our careers (regardless of how “successful” they are) are finite. Because we love the art form, we dance because we have to, not because we want to, which also makes us vulnerable to those looking to exploit our passion. We find fulfillment not in our paycheck but in the art we create, which is always a risk, sometimes terrifying, and more times than not…completely worth it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
The Soda Shop provides innovative and captivating performances for Front Range audiences (and beyond!) while offering a wide range of services, including performance art, artistic collaboration, movement/ technique classes, and community outreach. We had our premiere performance as a company in August 2024, and we are incredibly proud of the responses we got from our community. In a post-performance survey, one audience member captured beautifully what we believe sets our work apart; they said the show provided a “unique storyline, a diverse range of music and movement, and an incredible level of artistry and talent showcased by the choreographer and dancers!” Another said the show was “Truly one of the most beautiful pieces of dance I’ve ever witnessed. From the storyline to the movement to the music. It was unique, touching, funny, relatable.”
Currently, we are very excited about our upcoming performance of “My Vintage Valentine,” a spooky Valentine’s date night at a new venue local to Ft. Collins, The Neighbor. Tickets are available on our website and we’d love for you to check it out!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1) Show Up: Be in the room and be where you say you’ll be 100% of the time with 100% of yourself. It sounds cliche, but it really works.
2) Timely communication. In an age where an email can go unanswered for days, we find that prioritizing effective communication skills has really set us apart in this industry.
3) There HAS to be a sense of play. This isn’t rocket science, this isn’t brain surgery, no one is going to die, and we aren’t making millions, so this HAS to be fun. Be curious. Ask what if? Don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself, and don’t take yourself or your art too seriously.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
YES!
Everyone and anyone that would be interested. We are continually looking for other artists and creative people to collaborate with because we believe that dance has no future if there is no cross-pollination between other art forms and other sectors.
