We were lucky to catch up with Tawny Torres recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tawny , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Growing up I have seen many people in my family have great success. I have also seen many failures that have led to much heartbreak. In my family I have seen where giving up was not an option. For me first becoming a mother and experiencing childbirth and not being able to bring my first child home due to a complication didn’t stop me. My second born came shortly after and threw that both her and I almost lost our lives but that didn’t stop me. I started my career as a stylist very young and the very beginning of my career I was also starting a family. To carry on and build my craft alongside of building a life for two humans allowed me to strive towards being as successful as I always have dreamed. No matter what adversities have come along since childbirth I was built to proceed and do more with my passion. As long as I continue to make my two beautiful humans that I created proud I will continue to be resilient in the beauty industry and hopefully leave a mark where everybody remembers my name!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a hair artist in Jacksonville Florida and I have a passion for creative work in the cosmetology industry. At my salon I enjoy providing a private experience for guests to relax and unwind while I give them the hair look that they desire. The most exciting part of my career has been gaining the opportunity to work local fashion shows to then finally see the dream of working for New York Fashion Week. I am also an event organizer that loves to create opportunities for networking with local businesses in order to make connections with the community. I also am looking forward to more future projects doing photoshoots as a collaboration with known photographers.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
During my career as a stylist the one thing that I noticed in the past in my industry is that learning hair texture always got overlooked. The one thing that I always strived for was to be flexible in my industry in order to be able to serve anyone who walks through my door. Once I graduated from cosmetology school I took it upon myself to learn the things that I was not taught like how to do hair for a different texture and culture. My time in cosmetology school was very different than how things are today and being in this mindset during the journey of my career it gives me joy to see that hair texture is now being taught as a part of the curriculum as it always should have been. If there is any sound advice that I could give to young up and coming stylists it would be to always learn the difference in hair texture and how it behaves. Just understanding the behavior of texture will help to determine the outcome of your color, haircut, updo, you name it!

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Being a solo business owner has its ups and downs. On the upside the flexibility is amazing because you are the boss! On the downside you are the boss! Running a business on your own can be daunting if you don’t learn how to balance your work home and social life. One thing I have learned is that being patient and listening to details can improve your way of communicating with people. In the past my industry taught us to always hurry up and get things done. Well with the way things have changed and techniques and the expectations set by social media for beauty has changed the way we have to do our work. Details are everything! I have learned by listening and paying attention to more detail to improve how I communicate the time it takes in order to provide a service for my clients so that they can leave satisfied. This was not something that I mastered overnight and I have not always been successful. I do appreciate that being able to talk more with my clients on a personal level allows for me to be a better service provider which is why I love providing my one-on-one time to my guests.
