Meet Dr. Paul Salfen

We recently connected with Dr. Paul Salfen and have shared our conversation below.

Dr. Paul, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

My father and grandfathers. They always got the work done – no complaints, no excuses, and I never saw a day where any of them would just not do something because they didn’t feel like it. If they said they’d do something you could count on it. My grandfather had a plaque in his office, which is now in my dad’s office that has a drawing of a guy hitting a baseball and it says, “Spit on it and get back out there.”

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I absolutely love what I do. Sometimes it’s hard for people to wrap their heads around what I do because I do it all: writing, editing, PR, marketing, sales, hosting events and shows, social media management, and media training. Most people stick to one thing but I like doing it all. I like responding, “What do you need?” when people ask about my work because if I don’t do it, I know someone who can and can do it well. That said, I’m super excited about my new book, GOING FOR IT!, and the new show around it but also still enjoying co-hosting with NFL legend Drew Pearson and doing tons of interviews with fascinating people. Also, I love working with Charity Road because I really want to help as many people as possible and we feed a lot of people!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I think persistence, patience, and consistency are key but really just being open to whatever comes your way is a great way to be. I’ve asked advice from the most famous and successful people in the world and a lot of it has to do with those qualities but if anyone asks me I always say this, “Never give up.” It’s that simple. Being focused on your goal and being downright stubborn about it will get you there but also doing what you love gives you an incredible quality of life and sense of satisfaction. Every day I have something to look forward to but only because that’s how I set it up.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

My parents are the most loving and kind people you’d ever be lucky enough to meet. They taught me so many great things but it was really living by example. I’ve never heard them be disparaging to anyone for no reason, they surround themselves with great people, and always do the right thing. They just showed us the way by just being good people and letting us follow in those footsteps and I’m forever grateful that I had – and still have – people around me that lead with love and I never have to question anything they’ve said or done. I’m still trying to learn to be great like them and always want to make them proud.
