Meet Pearl P

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Pearl P a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Pearl, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.

I developed my ability to take risks from my parents. My mother immigrated from Grenada to the US in her 30s by herself. Despite having a lack of resources, my mom made the best of what she had in hopes that it would pay off and provide a better life for herself and hopefully her future family.

My father is a military veteran who went through many obstacles and hurdles while in the military. He now continues to advocate for veterans and also serves the community as a counselor. Both my parents had very humble beginnings, but the trajectory of their lives changed the moment they decided to take a risk and sacrifice in order to get to where they wanted to be in life.

As a result of my upbringing, it has instilled in me confidence and the willpower to step out in faith and do things afraid even if I don’t know how things will pan out. I trust in myself, and I trust that God will direct my path every step of the way.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Professionally, I am focused on completing my master’s degree at Georgetown University.

Outside of my professional and academic life, I am a beauty and lifestyle content creator! This has been my passion since my senior year in high school. I first started out making hair tutorials on YouTube, and then I shifted my focus to Instagram, which is where I am most active. It has truly been a journey, but I am so blessed with the small but mighty following that I have across all of my platforms (Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok).

What many don’t know is that I took on content creation because it provided an outlet and safe space for me. Growing up as an only child could get lonely, so I was always finding activities to immerse myself in, and content creation was the one that stuck.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three qualities/skills that have been most impactful in my journey as a content creator are adaptability, humility, and patience.

For those who are early in their journey as a content creator, the best way to develop these qualities/skills is to:

1. Be open to learning from others in the industry.

2. Remember that good things take time.

3. Continue to work on your craft; you’ll eventually see the fruits of your labor.

4. Not all money is good money, so choose who you work with wisely.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

The one challenge I’ve been facing is with growth on my social media platforms. The growth is slow and steady.

I think what I’m going through is something that a lot of creators face when going from being a small creator and not as visible to then becoming a large creator with more visibility.

I’ve been trying to overcome this by working on the quality of my content and doing semi-frequent social media audits.

But regardless of this challenge, I remind myself that my worth is not based on the amount of followers, likes, or shares I have!
