We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Damon Young a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Damon, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Growing up, I struggled with shyness, insecurities, and a lack of confidence, challenges that carried over into my high school years. However, the transformation in my confidence and self-esteem can be attributed to my high school track coach, Danielle Todman. During my time in track, I grappled with significant self-doubt, often telling myself that I wasn’t good enough and doubting my ability to achieve my goals. The rigorous training my coach put me through was intense and at times painful, but it ultimately pushed me in the most positive way possible. She helped me realize that I am capable of achieving far more than I had ever imagined. For that, I will be forever grateful to her. After enduring that transformative experience, I came to believe that there was little I couldn’t accomplish if I fully applied myself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Damon Young Jr., and I’m proud to say I’m just a kid from Newark, NJ, with a big dream and an even bigger drive. At 18, while still in high school, I took a leap of faith and set out to build my own media company. I quit my job, bet on myself, and never looked back.
Now, four years later, that leap is paying off. I’ve not only been able to support my family but also inspire a new generation of photographers and videographers to chase their own dreams. The most exciting part? This is just the beginning.
As I step into this next chapter, I’m setting my sights on goals my younger self could only imagine. DTV won’t just be a company—it will be a movement.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The first skill that has profoundly impacted my journey is self-discipline. A lack of discipline is so common that it often defines what makes an average person. If you ever aspire to be great, discipline is the one quality that will set you apart from the rest.
The second key to my growth has been financial knowledge. Thanks to my mother, my big sister, and my own research, I learned to make wise financial decisions. I discovered how to leverage my money to benefit me and fuel my growth—in other words, how to make my money work for me.
Lastly, my determination to break the stereotype of where I’m from has driven me the most. Growing up in an environment where expectations were limited to Sports, School, or the Streets, I was motivated to defy those boundaries. No one expects business owners to emerge from where I’m from, and that’s exactly why I’ve pushed forward. I’m doing something beyond what’s expected, and in the process, I’m showing others that they can, too.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
The position I find myself in today is largely due to the influence and support of my mother. From an early age, she raised me with the values and principles she wished she had been taught. My mother instilled in me the belief that I could achieve anything I set my mind to. Moreover, she imparted lessons to me at just 13 years old that many individuals, even in their 20s, are still learning. She never coddled me or shielded me from the realities of the world. Instead, she consistently held me to high standards, encouraging me to fully apply myself in every endeavor. She has always believed in me, never doubting my potential or judging my ambitions. Throughout my journey in content creation, she has remained my unwavering supporter and my number one fan.
