We were lucky to catch up with Betty Phelps recently and have shared our conversation below.
Betty, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My family. My grandparents were tobacco farmers that struggled and worked hard to provide a home and life for 12 children. They passed those traits down to my Mother who married a man with those same traits, I always remember “Dreams don’t work unless you do” that’s what I have to remember each day. I was always taught hard work pays off.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My biggest goal with my business is having a connection with our customers and our flowers bringing a emotional response, whether its a birthday, get well or sympathy, we want each arrangement to bring those feelings, which is why they were sent in the first place.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Determination to keep looking ahead and not letting a slower day get me down. Faith that things will work out and the business will come if you work hard. Knowledge plays a large part keeping up with trends and color but translating that into your own style to keep your uniqueness.
I was told it would take 30, 000 to start my business in 2003 and I only had 10,000. It was tough but I was determined I could open on that and start my business. It’s amazing what you can do if you are willing to work hard and believe in yourself.

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
Being sick and still trying to work. I’m in kidney failure and had to start on dialysis this year. It’s three times a week for 4 hours a day. Trying to fit that in my schedule and still work has been tough but my customers are pretty understanding as I deal with dialysis and search for a kidney donor. That’s been the hardest obstacle this year.
