Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Scott Newman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Scott, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
For me, creativity is a choice. With every design, performance or project I try to approach it from a place of openness and originality, The more I can channel my experiences to find my unique point of view for that work, the better the outcome. From my client projects with Sonos, Netflix or MoMA, to my creative agency’s own sound and storytelling festival, On Air Fest, each day offers opportunities to innovate. I try to always ask, is this the right approach for right now, by me, and the only approach that I uniquely can take? If yes, it’s likely a good pursuit.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a creative artist and entrepreneur. I founded the creative agency, work x work to satisfy the needs of brands to express themselves through true storytelling. My approach is grounded in 20+ years’ experience building brands, and crafting successful cross-platform marketing campaigns.
I’m also the Founder and Director of On Air Fest, the premier sound and storytelling festival, uplifting the creators and organizations shaping our world. Centering culture and creativity, podcasts are elevated into an art form and expanded through voice, visuals and multi-sensory experiences. For eight years – in Brooklyn & LA – artists, storytellers and culture seekers have come to be challenged, inspired and to be a part of what’s next.
As On Air Fest prepares to enter its biggest year yet, its Brooklyn festival Feb 19-21 2025 remains the preeminent and most influential destination for creative storytellers and listeners alike, with past talent including Malcolm Gladwell, Seth Meyers, Norah Jones, Jason Derulo, Audie Cornish, Francis Ford Coppola, Ira Glass, and many more.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For me its about being prolific and not too precious. Find the answers through the work and always. make the curreent project, however big or small, the dream project.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
“Its Not How Good You Are, Its How Good Your Want To Be” by the late, great Paul Arden, has been an incredible tool for me. Its like a cheat sheet through every creative opportunity.
