Meet Erick Englehart

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Erick Englehart a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Erick, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?

Where does my generosity come from? I’ve always been driven to help others, and my desire to make a difference only grew stronger after witnessing the hardships of the recession. Seeing people lose their jobs and homes had a profound impact on me, and unfortunately, I see similar struggles today.
This experience sparked a promise to myself to spread love, positivity, and support those in need. Through the Buttheadz Growers Club, we’ve turned this vision into reality. Over the past two years, we’ve built a thriving community garden, donating fresh produce to feed the hungry and collecting canned goods for local food banks.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

We launched Buttheadz Grow Shop in 2021, and it’s been an incredible journey.
As a long-time cannabis enthusiast, I’ve always been passionate about growing and sharing knowledge with others.
The opioid crisis and its devastating impact on our community spurred me to make a positive change.
Teaching people to grow their cannabis for medicine has been rewarding. We’ve also developed patented Coco Coir and Buttheadz Living Soil, made from recycled materials, to promote sustainable and healthy plant growth.

I founded the Buttheadz Growers Club, a 501c nonprofit, two years ago. Our community of 420-friendly gardeners aims to change the stigma surrounding cannabis. We partner with SEMO Food Bank and Mercy Hospital to grow vegetables and herbs for their Plant Prescription Program. We also maintain the Jackson Community Garden and host canned food drives to support our community. It is so rewarding to have classes every 2 weeks to teach the community how to grow many different types of plants for food and medication.
It’s amazing to work towards changing the stigma surrounding cannabis, showing the world its potential for positive change and community benefit. We are looking to have fundraising events in the future.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The three skills I find most valuable are patience, communication, and adaptability. These skills didn’t come naturally to me, but through practice and dedication, I’ve honed them over time.
Firstly, patience has been instrumental in my journey. The patience I’ve developed from growing a garden has surprisingly helped me in growing a business. Setting goals and dreams, then patiently waiting for them to materialize, has been crucial. Whether it’s waiting for seeds to sprout in the garden or for business ventures to take off, patience has been essential.
Secondly, communication skills have been vital. Clear communication involves not only speaking effectively but also listening actively. Listening is an underrated skill that allows us to learn from others, respect their opinions, and develop empathy. By listening and communicating effectively, I’ve been able to succeed and grow as a person.
Lastly, adaptability is about approaching challenges with an open and innovative mindset. It’s about seeing difficulties as opportunities to find new solutions and routes to success. Adaptability has allowed me to stay resilient and focused, even in the face of obstacles.
Ultimately, the key to developing these skills is having a positive mindset and outlook on life. With a growth mindset, we can continually improve and become better versions of ourselves.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed, I use a few strategies to manage my emotions. First, I take 5-10 minutes to calm myself down or meditate on the problem. Then, I approach the problem with a positive mindset. Additionally, I often go to the gym, take a run, or go for a walk to think about the problem and find a solution. These activities help me clear my mind and feel less overwhelmed.
