Meet DJ Helios

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to DJ Helios. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi DJ, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My unwavering work ethic is a direct reflection of my immigrant parents. My father, raised in the mountains of Chihuahua (called the Sierra Tarahumara), was one of 13 children primarily raised by his mother. His remarkable journey took him from humble beginnings to the height of academia, where he now stands as a tenured professor at the university he teaches at.

My mother, the sixth child among ten siblings, bravely left her home at the age of 19. Today, she is an exceptionally accomplished teacher, having recently been nominated for the prestigious Teacher of the Year award in her school district.

Enduring countless sacrifices along the way, they overcame language barriers, cultural differences, and hardships to ensure they received an education and built a life for my sister and I. Witnessing their tireless dedication and unwavering determination has fueled my own ambition, compelling me to follow their unwavering resolve and perseverance. Their sacrifices serve as a constant reminder of the boundless opportunities that await those who are willing to invest their efforts wholeheartedly, and I am forever grateful for their remarkable example.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
From growing up observing my dad’s love of music to being a musician since a young age, music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It’s been my form of expression and my lifeline through life’s tribulations. I remember dabbling in the DJ/Producer world in high school – making mixes for my friend’s quinces and dance performances.

Borrowing a friend’s turn tables in the Spring of 2015, I embarked on my journey as a DJ and never looked back. I truly love spinning records – blending everything from house, r&b, amapiano, reggaeton, cumbias and more. I’ve been blessed to DJ internationally and for big name brands like La Colombe and Espolòn. I’ve released multiple successful mixes under my HYU (Hype You Up) series, as well as themed tracks like Essence y Flow or my Bad Bunny tribute with over 16k total plays on Soundcloud. I’ve grown my online presence on other platforms like TikTok, with fun and upbeat transitional videos, where I’ve amassed an audience of over 17,000 followers.

I’m extremely passionate about being involved in in my local community and partnering with female creatives and entrepreneurs. From deejaying women wellness retreats to working with non-profit organizations, I love playing tunes to allow women to feel like their best selves.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three skills that I think most impacted my DJ career are – work ethic, consistency and resiliency. Being able to show up every day and give it 100% (even though my 100% may look different from day to day). Consistency in practicing my skills, researching and learning music constantly and in my online presence. As someone in the music and entertainment industry you have to learn to be resilient; taking any bumps in the road as lessons instead of failures.

My best advice would be to find a mentor and/or a community that pushes you to develop these skills. A person or a group of people that hold you accountable, but that are also there to support you when times get tough. Because they will get tough. But the sense of unwavering support from friends, family or your community will allow you to be successful.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I would love to collaborate with more female and non-binary DJs/artists in order to continue the work of breaking barriers and increase visibility and representation. I also want to continue partnering with organizations and brands whose mission is to empower underrepresented communities.
