We recently connected with Brett Miller and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brett, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
What a tough question! So many things all happening at once to lead me or anyone to where they stand today. I always like to acknowledge that we all are truly products of our influences growing up, and even as working adults. We are so much a reflection of the people, places, activities, events, etc. that make up our lives. So much of self-esteem and confidence, in fact, starts with the encouragement and general support that may or may not be around you. I, for one, owe a lot to my upbringing for bestowing a strong sense of self and understanding of my desires and mission. That is exactly who I am today. My parents and environment helped me flourish in ways I could only hope to emulate for my kids. Of course, that’s not everything. There are plenty of people coming from good homes and neighborhoods that are lost as adults, as well conversely people with tougher upbringings propelling themselves beyond anyone’s expectations. It’s only the start of a story. At some point, those who are confident, successful, and living with a strong sense of self made the right decisions somewhere along the way to drop negative influences and replace them with constructive influences that help them continue to build on themselves over the years. It’s also important to fail along the way of ultimately finding what and who works best for you. A real phenom and constant of life is that it’s all about momentum. Results always show in time of consistent, repetitive activity, both positively and negatively. This denotes the value of patience, as well. So, how do you develop confidence and self-esteem? Be mindful and intentional with your environment and the people you surround yourself with, and employ patience as you take gradual steps toward applying yourself to your passions and desires, whilst reflecting on your progress with constructive feedback from yourself and others you trust. Overtime, you’ll morph into an unrecognizable presence from before you started.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I live a life of music 24/7. I am a full time music entertainer, traveling all around South Florida singing and playing piano and guitar for all types of occasions, both publicly and privately. I am also a recording artist and songwriter, with music I’ve made and released commercially since 2017. I describe myself as music entrepreneur, because even the few lines above don’t fully cover everything that’s going on daily. I’m also an investor, a writer, a teacher, and even a landlord. There truly are so many facets of the music industry, and I find myself dabbling in most of them. At the end of the day, I’m really a small business owner who’s focused on selling his product, and that product is me. It’s been an exciting way of life, as I find myself apart of cooler and cooler projects as the name permeates. As of this time last year, I was asked to front-man Life in Technicolor, a Coldplay tribute band, that has since played some awesome venues in South Florida, of which some I may not have had another chance to play at. My ultimate project however is my own music. After a 6 year stint living in NYC in the mid-late 2010’s, I became obsessed with songwriting and producing my debut material and beyond. Since then, I’ve released several EP’s and countless singles, and hosted several ticketed performances in Manhattan, Nashville, and now my sights are set on performing my music here in South Florida. Over the past few years, I’ve allowed myself to partake in other awesome projects to build reputation and my own familiarity with the music scene here. It’s been very rewarding thus far, and now in 2025 I’m set to transition to a new phase of assembling a group of high level players to host some unforgettable performances here in South FL, and then to take it on tour. I do invite anyone reading to follow along on this journey and reach out to make a connection with me. Original music and the artist scene in general is lacking in South Florida, but I hope to do my part to rejuvenate it.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
As stated in my previous blurb, and as cliche as it sounds, the answer to this question is simply: curiosity, consistency, and patience. That’s honestly how you succeed at anything in this world. It’s just easier said than done. The best example is going to the gym. Learning best practices, setting the routine and sticking to it for several months is the only way to see the results you’re envisioning when first starting out. Same goes for learning instruments, a new language, social media, running a business, even more internally like with building confidence in yourself. That takes time and consistency too. It such a boring, cliche answer, but it’s only cliche because it’s true. Obviously, the real question is how to actually do it correctly, and to be quite honest, I still struggle with doing the methodology properly. Some stuff came more natural than others. Such is life. As long as your aware of it though, you always have a chance to make the correction. A real tidbit I have is that it can get harder as you get older, especially with regards to being curious. Life does take you in other directions, so attacking things early when you’re younger and filled with curiosity and a desire to grow is imperative. Of course, we gain wisdom and experience as we go along, and that should help us work smarter, not harder. To not digress further, keep it simple. Stay curious and willing to learn, make a plan that you can stick to, and just stick to it. That’s it, That will always be it.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
A lot of what I’m doing today is because I was once very consistent and curious about something and now I’ve developed it enough to make it a pillar in my life, but I still have so many things I want to accomplish. There are only so many hours in the day, and the expression goes – you chase two rabbits, and catch none. Sometimes in my effort to improve in so many different areas, I render myself stagnant and ultimately get distracted with trivial tasks instead. It’s never perfect, and we should never be too hard on ourselves on this topic. We are not machines. But I do believe in achieving a steady line of progress that is manageable and more importantly, enjoyable. Sometimes we have to make sacrifices, front-loading a lot of work upfront to afford a simpler schedule later on; to put the snowball in motion. So although I may not have a particular challenge I’m facing, per se, I do have goals that feel distant at times. Another cliche, however – if there’s a will, there’s a way. It’s never too late to take a step back and try something different to accomplish what matters to you. That is something I’m currently facing, as I’m sure many are.
