We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jada Ingram a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Jada with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic comes from a crippling fear of failure. The thought of failure absolutely TERRIFIES me so I work. And I work very hard. I put blood, sweat, and tears in everything that I do and it has really paid off. Even when I know there’s no possible way for me to fail, I work anyway. I work to prove that I’m worthy. To prove that I deserve to be where I am. To prove that I can be just as successful as the next person.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I paint shoes. I take a customer’s idea and I turn it into something special. I’m still small and I only have around 400 or so followers on Instagram. I don’t mind that though. I love what I do and I started fairly young too. My business is my biggest accomplishment. I work very quick but still produce high quality results and that’s what makes me special. I currently have a website and I plan on finding a way to get the word out somehow. I’ll figure it out. I always do.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Patience, maturity, and of course creativity. Since I was a kid, I’m 17 now, I always heard “You’re so mature for your age.” and trust me, that comes in handy. Being mature and having the patience to talk to all sorts of people has allowed me to come across so many different opportunities. The creativity is the easiest part because customers tend to have enough ideas to make something amazing. Then when it’s all over I get to hear “Woah, I didn’t know you were a kid” That’s the best part.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
I’m currently experiencing a client desert. It’s difficult but it happens often and I have yet to figure out why. I will have a influx of customers and then nothing for months. I’ve been trying to figure it out but I can’t. I’m also not too worried about it because it’s not my main source of income. HOWEVER, it doesn’t suck any less. I love making shoes for people. I just wish there were more people around to get some
