We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica Owusu a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I overcome imposter syndrome by staying true to myself. Staying within a no negative energy state by staying in a positive state. People think being ‘fake’ or overly trying to fit in and forgetting themselves is the answer when it causes more problems. Being true to yourself creates a fulfilling life.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
The most exciting thing about my business is helping customers. Customers may be customers but they become the backbone of the business. Something I’d want readers to know is that even though your business may be small it’s growing, so treat every customer with respect.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three skills within this journey would be communication, networking, and problem solving. Communication with customers is important. Promotion of sales or appointment confirmations are the things that should communicated before, during, and after interactions. Networking to increase contacts, for example increasing the number of customers, or gain knowledge of situations or solutions. Problem solving for every day problems, such as finishing a service within a time frame for a customers due to a time crunch.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When in an overwhelming situation I listen to music and dance or meditate. Music helps me with thinking and when playing my favorites, I end up dancing or creating a solution. I meditate to clear my mind. Clearing my mind helps to avoid anything that might provoke myself into a deeper thinking state that may cause frustration. The advise I’d give is find something that’ll calm not only you but help you create a solution to the situation and add to the frustration.
