Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kaneeka Moore. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kaneeka, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I am one of 15 siblings but that’s a story for another time. My work ethic came from my daddy Eugene ” Disco Pete” Embry. The man that raised me and one of my older sisters alone. He was a great man, role model and even better father. He taught us so much as kids that we were able to take with us into our adult lives. He taught us what love was through his actions. He taught us how to drive, how to cook, how to dress. He taught us so much in what I feel was a short amount of time because he pasted away when I was 16 and my sister was 19. Which was 3 months after my mom was assaulted and murdered. I like to believe that they are both at peace and together watching over us.
My dad was a very hard working man. Everyone who knew him knew how much he loved his girls. I like to place the blame on him as to why I can be a spoiled brat lol even in my adult age. He literally spoiled us rotten. We never wanted or needed for anything from anyone else because he had us covered. He had multiple streams of income. He worked as one of the first conductors on the public transportation in Chicago IL which is known as the CTA. He was one of the first DJ’s on soul train. He sold CD’s, mixtapes, and VHS videos. Fun fact about me, I have probably seen all the old movies and know all the old school songs lol. He was definitely one of the best dressed men I have ever seen still to this day. When my sister and I were in elementary school we had our first small business selling candy thanks to my dad. He did his best to show us the importance of making our own money and budgeting. He later worked as a colon hydrotherapist. And was about to open his own business in our home basement before he had a heart attack. Causing him to have to get a stent in his heart. Which failed leading to his death.
My dad’s work ethic was unmatched compared to anyone else that was around us. He worked so hard to make sure that we had a good life and everything he didn’t have growing up. Everything we wanted and needed my daddy provided it for us. He was always on the go. Watching him work so hard and accomplish so many milestones in his life is my motivation and enforces my own work ethic.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
For those who don’t know who I am. My name is Kaneeka Moore and I am the owner of Nail-ish ✌🏾, a licensed nail artist, fashion stylist, jewelry designer, content creator, and business consultant. I am what my sister calls a “Jackie of All Trades”. I created Nail-ish ✌🏾 originally in 2018 to provide professional nail services to large events and in home. I had to pivot my business from services to products when the pandemic hit. Which turned out to be the best move for my business.
I thought I was obsessed with nail services but now I am overly obsessed with creating my Press on nails and unique handmade jewelry. I love being able to use my hands to create beautiful wearable art. I never even knew I was capable of creating such beautiful pieces. Sometimes I impress myself with some of the creations. I thank the Most High for not only blessing me with my creativity but also allowing me to recognize my gifts and use them to inspire others.
There are truly no limits to what I can do from here. I am either thinking of new ideas and things to add to my business. Or I am almost always creating new pieces or thinking of new items to create. Other than not having enough money to execute all my ideas and projects. Time also plays a major factor. But who knows what is to come next with me. I am always trying to learn new things rather its techniques, knowledge, or new products to incorporate. Continuingly learning and growing with my business.
What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back the three most impactful things in my journey I would have to say is having leadership qualities, personable & creativity skills. I believe possessing these skills and qualities have allowed me to grow in being a business owner. There are other skills, qualities, and areas of knowledge that also plays a major role but these for me are the top three. I’m sure everyone’s journey will look different. But I believe being able to use your natural abilities are the most effective.
Being able to take the lead and help direct not only others to reach a goal but also yourself is a quality not everyone possess. Having the ability of leadership is no easy task. It can be hard for people to follow your lead and believe that you are knowledgeable in the area you are leading. Or trust in what you are doing. I believe leadership qualities are so important because you are able to take the initiative to get things going, make necessary changes when needed, be open for help in areas that are unfamiliar, etc.
Having personable skills are just as important if not more important than leadership qualities. I believe this to be true especially running a business because you have to interact with clients and customers. Being able to communicate and interact with different types of people genuinely, is also a skill not everyone possess. But it can get better over time. I believe the more you do most things the better you get. I also believe in just being yourself is key. And just treating people how you would want to be treated.
I believe out of the three my top skill is creativity. I believe this is the best skill to possess because you are able to create something out of nothing. Even with no leadership qualities or personable skills having the ability to be creative over powers any skill or knowledge that could be learned. It’s hard to teach creativity. I believe you either have it or you don’t. Most people like to play it safe and stay in the box. Only the creatives dare to think outside of that box.
Advice that I have for anyone on whatever journey they are on is to just do what works for you. It’s ok to step out of your comfort zone and try new things to see how you can expand your skills and knowledge. Don’t try to force something that isn’t aligned with what you have a passion for and love doing. Use the skills, qualities, and areas of knowledge that comes naturally to you. Then enhance those to improve on your journey.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I would actually love to partner or collaborate with more creatives to create more creative content for our platforms. As well as create some dope pieces of jewelry, clothes, art, nails, candles, fragrances, or other creative endeavors. I would also like to partner with more small business owners to get my products in more stores and reach more people. And also partner with some investors who would like to donate and help fund Nail-ish ✌🏾 and my other projects and creations to get off the ground and grow. I eventually want to have a brick and mortar that host small businesses as a collective mall.
