Meet Katherine Fickell

We recently connected with Katherine Fickell and have shared our conversation below.

Katherine, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

I often wish I could go back to college, when all I had to focus on was finding inspiration in my photojournalism classes and filming craft beer reviews. These days, my regular job keeps my mind busy, sometimes pulling me down rabbit holes, other times overwhelming me altogether. So many ideas, so little time. To keep my creativity alive, I read books, scroll through social media for fresh inspiration, and chat with my other creative friends. Fortunately, photography has always been a passion of mine, and it’s a part of who I am. And of course, Star Wars continues to fuel my dreams and keep me inspired.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

When I was younger, my family would always record our vacations and daily life with a camcorder. As I got older, I wanted one for myself, and since then, I’ve become the documenter of everything. Drawing never became my strong suit, so I turned to video and photography as my form of art. There are boxes and boxes of printed photos, memories captured as phone technology evolved, and a shift from Canon to Nikon along the way. I’ve always been surrounded by content creation, and now, I get to continue that journey. Over the years, my photography has been called many things, but in September 2024, we finally took the leap and purchased an LLC to make LK Creations official. I’m grateful to have a day job that allows me to explore opportunities outside the 9 to 5, and for my amazing fiancé, who pushes me to be better every day. Through it all, photography has followed me, and I’m excited to grow my brand in this new chapter.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three key areas that had the biggest impact on my journey were: (1) Having a great support system. A huge shoutout to my parents and grandparents for helping me get through college. That’s where I learned so much, and they always supported my passion. Even though most of my family is in the medical field, they still let me “take pictures” and knew it would be more than that. (2) Doing what you love and if it’s easy to start, even better. Having a natural talent is a gift, and it can help guide you down the right path. I’m lucky that I get to do what I’ve always enjoyed! And (3) Schooling. My advice is simple: never stop learning. Take a class, reach out to an expert, watch a tutorial, or just throw yourself into it. Nothing will teach you more (and get your heartrate up) than learning quickly on the job.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Absolutely! I love building my community and forming partnerships. Cross-promotion in today’s digital age is one of the easiest ways to grow both brands! I enjoy planning events, hosting tent setups, running online giveaways, promoting other products, and so much more. I’m looking for anyone in video editing, content creation, graphic design, storytelling, lifestyle modeling, art for sale, singers… literally anything! The reason I named my business LK Creations instead of LK Photography is because I want it to encompass all forms of creativity. The best way to reach out is via email at LKCreationsSC@gmail.com. Hope to chat soon!
