Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Soohyun Cho. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Soohyun, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
My purpose began with a simple and pure love for art and video games—a passion driven by the desire to see my creations come to life on screen. Over time, this initial spark evolved into something much deeper as I reflected on why I’m so drawn to this industry.
I’ve come to realize the profound respect and admiration I have for games as a medium. Their ability to provide refuge and escape for some, foster competition and build communities for others, and uniquely convey emotions and messages through storytelling and interactivity is unmatched.
This understanding has given me a sense of pride and responsibility in the work I do. It’s not just about creating games but contributing to an art form that touches lives in so many meaningful ways. These are the reasons I’m passionate about growing in this industry, taking on bigger challenges, and pushing the boundaries of what games can achieve.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As 3D Artists working in games, we create detailed, visually engaging models, textures, and assets that bring characters, environments, and objects to life in interactive worlds. We combine artistic skill with technical expertise to align our creations with the game’s style, mechanics, and performance requirements.
The most exciting and attractive part about this job is getting to work with other developers to breathe life into an idea, from concept to playable/interactive implementation inside the game. Getting to see your work become part of player experience is very rewarding!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Teamwork and cooperation: Every project is a mutual effort by many stakeholders and teams. It is important to be a team player who is open to criticism and feedback and always puts the project’s needs/goals first.
Willingness to learn and adapt: Trends, techniques, and technology evolve and change fast. I try not to get too complacent in the current state of things and try to absorb and synthesize new information.
Attention to detail: Ensure that the work not only meets technical and aesthetic standards but also elevate the quality and impact of a project. Set the quality bar high for the work done and develop an eye to critique and improve it continuously.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I tend to be a natural overthinker, which means I can easily feel overwhelmed when faced with complex situations or an abundance of thoughts. While I’m still a work in progress when it comes to managing this tendency, I’ve found that taking proactive steps can make a big difference.
One of the most effective strategies for me is simply writing my thoughts down. It’s a way to declutter my mind and see everything laid out in front of me. By putting my thoughts into words, I can better understand what’s truly causing the overwhelm and identify the steps I need to take to address it.
After I’ve spilled everything onto paper, I work on organizing those thoughts into actionable to-do lists. Breaking things down into small, manageable tasks gives me a clear sense of direction and allows me to start tackling them right away. This process helps me overcome the paralysis that often comes with feeling overwhelmed.
It’s not a perfect system, and I’m always learning and improving, but this approach has been instrumental in helping me stay focused and productive even when my thoughts threaten to get the better of me.
