Meet Marc Lohse

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marc Lohse. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marc below.

Marc, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

I was very blessed to have parents that did whatever it took to provide for us which
included: a lot of hard work, many long hours, and multiple jobs. That modeled for me
an attitude of “whatever it takes” and “be the hardest working person in the room” that
sticks with me to this day.
I take pride in building this company and the people around me and knowing that putting
in the work pays off. Taking the time to study further and better learn my craft as a
builder and businessperson only enhances the work my team and I can do and the
product and experience we can put out there. As we finish each home, we have the
great satisfaction knowing that we have given it our all and it continues to motivate my
team and I to build the best homes in Colorado.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Over 25 years ago I started working for a high-volume production builder in central
Indiana. I then moved on to building custom and luxury homes in Indiana and then in
Colorado. Home has always had a special meaning for me and so building homes
became a dream of mine. I’ve learned a lot along the way from some great builders I
have had the privilege of working with, but I knew that, at some point in time, I wanted to
start my own company and work directly with my own clients to build their dream
homes. What a ride the last 15 years have been. Starting with just myself and now
collaborating with a business partner and a team of 11 people that feel more like family,
we build between 8 to10 custom homes a year. Being a business owner is not always
easy, but I have found joy in the success of the business, and more importantly, getting
to have a positive impact on so many people’s lives. That’s really what it’s about.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Without a doubt, having the knowledge and skills to build a home properly is key, but
what I’ve found to be equally as important is understanding how to communicate and
work positively with the people on our direct and subcontracted team. More than a few
hundred human hands touch every aspect of a home build, and each of those humans

has their own level of skill, lives behind the scenes, and issues that they bring with them
to work every day. More than being in the home building business, we are in the people
business. Finding ways to encourage them, support them and the work they are doing
for you, communicate clearly with them, and hold accountability with them all at the
same time is a skill that no one will ever be perfect at. It is a continual learning journey
that you must be constantly committed to and engaged in to become better at.

There are a few more qualities and skills that are very important to continually work on if
you want to be in the construction business:
Perseverance, patience, flexibility, and learning not to take things personally are
massive. Necessary skills are: scheduling, sequencing, proactivity, budgeting and
forecasting etc. There are many great builders who are now on YouTube and Instagram
who are worth following and are teaching great things. Other than that, reading books
and just simply “putting in the time” is what’s necessary.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

We look to partner with people who have the same goals as us. Our team members
must buy in, as well as our subcontractors, to the overall mission. First and foremost, I
look for people who have a high level of integrity and honesty. People who do what they
say they are going to do. People who don’t have those characteristics will be the
downfall of your business. Look for the people who do the right thing when no one else
is looking. We also look to partner with people and teams who have a stable track
record with their businesses for a good period of time. When challenges come up, you
need people who have the stability and character to stick around to get through it. You
are who you surround yourself with!
