Meet Emma B

We recently connected with Emma B and have shared our conversation below.

Emma , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

Resilience, that skill came from my parents. Both overcame tremendous obstacles in their lives. Sure, they could have quit and through in the towel, but they did not. Even when trials would come my way, they would have me evaluate myself and problem solve. And I appreciate them for that. Everything in my life that comes and thrives off purpose is from my parents.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

My Mom was diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis in 2009. The diagnosis was a big hit to the family. She was the rock and foundation of the family unit. She carried herself with such grace and wonder. I wanted to learn what happened to her and why her body, the body she used to modern dance with and carry me in, why did this happen. I went on a journey called researching and there I learned that health begins in the mind. For a while I worked with the Michigan MS Society and helped launch the MS for African American’s brunch. I met so many people and all I saw was my mom’s face. There I learned we are our own cures, and we are our own defeats. Herbs, vitamins, proper mindset and minerals became a group of friends to me. And together along with my best friend, Emma’s Botanical Gardens was born. I do what I do because who are we without our health? When we are not intact it shows. Be your own cure and live a life so positive that nothing gets you down. I love hearing the results that people give us. We’ve helped families conceive children, scalp conditions heal, skin issue resolved, and reproductive health corrected. I myself dealt with fibroids and I don’t anymore. Just so the people will know we are expanding our hair care line to include shampoos and conditioners. We do offer hair oils that are ayuverdic, homemade soaps and liquid shea butters. We are currently working to get in a couple stores and attend more pop ups. Another goal of ours is help educated young children and teach them about proper nutrition and how to find it. A healthier you is a bloom a way.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three qualities, skills and areas of knowledge for me would be to keep going. Stay strong in the midst of adversity. Get over the hump and not just for yourself. We are all bent back for someone else. I’m standing on the shoulders of someone right now and had they stopped maybe Emma’s Botanical Gardens would not be. Always have a listening ear. A very keen learner’s ear. We do not have all knowledge in this world, we must work together. Keep your ears planted and listen the wind is always speaking and in it are lessons. Always take notes and write things down. Never be ashamed to have a note pad and pen. Draw what you see and analysis everything. Keep the questions coming because the further you go the more questions you will have.
To those who are just starting out I implore you sit under someone who will teach you right. Give you sound wisdom, knowledge and understanding. We all need teachers and guidance. I’ve been blessed to have two, my father Richard and mentor Dr. Kofa. Both are strong men who have the wisdom of blazing fire and the calm of summer rain. And to be a student of theirs gives me hope that one day I can pass the same knowledge to an upcoming generation.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

The most impactful thing that my parents did for me was love me. They supported me in everything that I always wanted to do. My Mom passed away in 2011 and it’s been my dad and I since then. He had a stroke back in 2019 and to see him now, you’d never know. But my dad goes with me to health food stores, he listens to my ideas, he critiques me, he promotes me and does all the things that a father should. Not only am I grateful but his presence in my life and business is impactful. My mom was the sweetest person one could ever met. I can talk about her and never grow tired. My business is named for her and I did that because it’s a mother’s love that get through sickness, trials of any kind and just when you need a hug. I wanted to business to represent what people will receive from us, love. My parent most impactful thing was just being themselves, raising me and loving me. My success is not mine alone but theirs indeed.
