Meet Drew Huff

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Drew Huff a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Drew, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?

When I was younger, I focused on the outcome of a project instead of the process. This invariably led to rushed efforts, panicking at deadlines, and above all, a lack of consistency.

As I grew older, I began to understand that the key to discipline is in constructing useful systems/processes that focus on small efforts consistently.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I write fanastical, often horror-laden books! From my fast-paced horror debut, FREE BURN, (Dark Matter INK, March 2024) to my trippy cosmic horror novel, THE DIVINE FLESH (Dark Matter INK, March 2025), I always keep the plot moving.

I also do art! Right now, I’m having a fun time illustrating author baseball cards for the indie horror community.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Most importantly: The ability to determine what is essential to achieving a goal, and what’s not.

Secondly, listening. People will tell you everything you need to know if you can hear and observe it.

Lastly, networking. Don’t be afraid to look for opportunities and ask.

My biggest piece of advice is to learn people skills. They will take you farther than any degree or raw talent.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

Make a list of what absolutely needs to be done, and what can wait. The act of making a list helps the brain coordinate and categorize what it needs to.
