Meet Vincenzo Miccichè Hinckley

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Vincenzo Miccichè Hinckley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Vincenzo below.

Hi Vincenzo, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

I believe this is a lifelong journey. Confidence and self esteem, as well as trusting yourself is one of those things that can certainly ebb and flow throughout your life, career, etc. There were times when I was a bit younger that I felt unstoppable with boundless energy and was unfazed by negative feedback or challenges, then times when it held a little more weight and slowed me down a bit. I suppose real success is not faltering permanently.
As for constancy, I can always look to God (for inner resilience) and my family (external) for support and confirmation that I am on the right path and to re-energize my emotional/psychological strength. Two quick stories to illustrate.

About a year ago, my business had taken a rather steep downturn- even though we experienced high growth and client retention the market was incredibly slow (as it usually is in winter)- and I was totally overwhelmed by the lack of work and the lull that was happening. I prayed the Infant of Prague novena and not even a day later we were flooded with leads and referrals. If your business or financial situation is suffering, I can’t stress how efficacious this novena is.
The second story features my mother at the Gasparilla Film Festival in 2017. A film I had been part of was premiering and my family and I were running a bit late. As it would turn out the film was first on the line up and therefore we missed it. Once we sat down and realized, my mother excused herself, got up and disappeared for about 10 minutes then came back and we finished out the film block. After all the other films had been shown the MC came out and announced they would be showing the film again. My mother had- in very little time, no less- infiltrated this film festival, CIA-style, made pals with the organizers and gotten them to show the film again.
I could regale you with plenty other stories, both of my mother and other family members that have helped shape me and given me what some friends might now dub, confidence without direction, though I am afraid your readers would be in for a rather long session.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I was born in Sicily and grew up in Europe (mostly in northern Italy) until we moved to Florida. There I completed all of my formal schooling and met some of my most cherished and long-time friends. I come from a very large family that spans across many countries, Germany, France, Switzerland and the US. Growing up with such a large extended family and one that was so close has certainly shaped and stressed the importance of family and being helping one another out to the best of our capabilities. I can’t think of anything more important in life, other than God, than family and when I see friends or strangers express a disconnect it truly pains me.
Professionally I have had quite an eclectic and interesting CV. I began working at a young age delivering bouncy houses for a friend of my dad’s. From there I have had the pleasure of working as a line prep cook/dishwasher for a fast casual tex mex chain, a Lifeguard, a customer service tech and wholesale rep for a boating supply company, a server, a bartender, a Brand Ambassador, a nightclub manager, a landscaper and many others, though by far my favorite has been sushi chef; my brother learned from an old school chef and then trained me.
What I do now is quite different. After the 2020 lockdowns I could not wait to get back to work. I was not sure about going back into hospitality or sales and decided to switch things up. In 2017 I moved to Manhattan to pursue acting in a bigger market and to find some great theatre to work on. During that time I was also freelancing part-time as a handyman and found that there seemed to be a high demand for quality contract work. Most of the clients that hired me either quickly became regulars, or provided a great deal of referrals and they all had expressed dissatisfaction with previous contractors for various reasons. In 2021, not ever having run a business, I decided to take a leap, created a brand and began advertising and marketing. Thus Hinckley’s Handyman Services, LLC was born. Now, four years later the brand has certainly expanded and grown a great deal. Originally, the majority of work surrounded furniture assembly, wall mounting and paint projects with the seasonal medium-sized remodels where I would need to hire several freelancers. HHS now focuses on Remodeling, Bespoke Woodwork, Wall Decor (including wallpaper) and Drywall & Paint and we regularly work with high-end Interior Designers, business owners and residential clients. One of my regular clients has recently expressed a potential partnership in another market so that is very exciting! What I find so incredibly enriching and rewarding about this line of business is the joy and satisfaction clients get when they see their homes actualized and their spaces personalized and refreshed; it makes the work worth it.
Artistically I have also been blessed. I began my acting journey in 2007, however, I have been a musician, and writer since much longer. Acting and improv is my passion, although in recent years I have enjoyed production. My wife, and I co-produced three episodes for a short sketch series called 99 Sketches (available on Youtube) with the help of a good friend of mine, who was the DP. Through the years I have had the honor of working with some really talented individuals both on screen and on stage. The latest screen projects I did would be American Rust on Showtime and Paramount’s Baywatch. In recent years I have been much more focused on theatre and have been working closely with Arthouse2B, a multidisciplinary group of artists cultivating Catholic arts renewal in NYC. This year I took part in a very unique rendition of Saint John Paul II’s The Jeweler’s Shop and the audience feedback was so overwhelmingly positive (we performed two fully sold out weekends) that they are looking to bring it back this year. Beyond that I am currently in pre-production for a passion project that is near and dear to my heart.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

This is a really tough one. There are many, much more than three that make you not just a success, but someone people want to be around and want to succeed, a good person in other words.

Qualities: Faith, Persistence, Humility
Faith above all else will give you the resilience and honesty that is required to live fully and boldly. Not relying on my own human willpower and limitations is so freeing. I know that where I lack strength I can look to God. I wish everyone might see that they don’t have to do it alone, even if it feels that way. Persistence will keep you going and humility will keep you growing. Without humility, your success runs the risk of burying you under the weight of your ego because success is, many times, about persistence.

Skills: Creativity, Negotiation, Organization
I think these might encompass many other aspects of a healthy business. you need to be creative in order to stand out in a market. Everyone is creative, though not everyone believes it. Children don’t have self-limiting beliefs unless imposed by adults, they are the ultimate expression of creation and creativity. If you are doing what you enjoy and are passionate about you will find creative energy to flow much more easily than if you are stuck at a 9 to 5. Some people enjoy that structure but if you are not one of them, look elsewhere and slowly transition to what you love. Negotiation gets a bad rep but we do it daily. It’s just a matter of finding compromise between you, clients and or personal relationships. It’s not about winning. Organization is key. If you don’t know how to build systems, if you don’t keep track of your hours, your contract averages, etc. you will have a harder time assessing the health of your business or your life. Look to your strengths, if you absolutely cannot get behind bookkeeping it might be wise to hire someone. If you have a great idea but not the hands-on skills, partner up. In life, that is what a wife or husband is there for. To complement and help grow, both here on earth and spiritually.

The biggest piece of advice I can give is read and get a mentor. Be voracious in books that help you self-actualize like business, psychology, financial reading and, even if you don’t believe, you will find deep wisdom in religious text in regards to both life and business. A mentor is invaluable. Not having to make the same mistakes someone else made can be the difference of years in your growth as an individual. If these qualities and skills are not in your wheelhouse, trust me when I say, you can practice and curate them until they are second-nature.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I am always looking to create and love to collaborate with people.

Artistically, I have a great network and love to connect people from dancers, to writers, painters, etc and love the intersection of these disciplines. As I said previously I also believe firmly in mentorship and if you are a young artist reading this and have questions, please reach out. If I am not able to answer your question, I am certain we can find someone who will. Self-discovery in the arts can be one of the most challenging and sometimes lonely endeavours.

What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?

Jim Cooney I used to believe success was all about how many shows you did,

Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?

What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?

We think this is an essential question because so often there is a disconnect between
