We recently connected with Kai Chang and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kai , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
How did you find your purpose?
Growing up in Taiwan under strict family rules, I had little freedom to express myself through fashion. After losing my mom at a young age, my aunt stepped in to raise me. She cared deeply, but her frequent critiques of my appearance and body deeply impacted my self-esteem. At school, I faced verbal bullying that reinforced those insecurities, leaving me feeling invisible and unheard.
Everything shifted when I attended university. For the first time, I had the freedom to explore who I was—and fashion became my outlet. I started experimenting with styles that made me feel confident and alive. Helping my roommates and friends find their own style became my favorite creative outlet. I found immense joy in seeing how a simple makeover could transform their confidence and make them feel truly seen.
That’s when I realized fashion was more than just clothing; it was a tool to help people express their individuality and embrace their worth. As I embraced my own unique style, I began to see myself in a new light. I learned to accept my body and discovered that confidence and beauty start from within.
Today, designing clothes and helping others discover their personal style is my greatest passion. Fashion has the power to empower, to tell a story, and to help people step into the best version of themselves. My purpose is simple: to create pieces that make people feel confident, authentic, and unapologetically themselves. For me, fashion isn’t just about how you look—it’s about how you feel and the message you send to the world.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Kai Athleisure is more than a clothing brand—it’s a movement grounded in resilience, authenticity, and a deep commitment to sustainability. The name “Kai” holds rich layers of meaning that reflect the heart of our mission. In Mandarin, it symbolizes “warrior” and “victory,” embodying strength and perseverance. In Japanese, it means “ocean” or “restoration,” evoking adaptability and renewal. On a personal level, it carries the legacy of my grandfather, who served in the Japanese army and gave me this name. To me, Kai represents courage, transformation, and the enduring spirit that runs through our designs and our mission.
At Kai, fashion is more than fabric and trends—it’s a canvas for self-expression. Every piece in our collection is crafted to empower individuals to celebrate their authentic selves, no matter their style. Whether your vibe is sleek and modern, boho, or uniquely yours, Kai Athleisure adapts to your life. Our eco-conscious designs are made to seamlessly transition from the studio to the street, blending comfort, style, and sustainability.
But what truly sets Kai apart is our sense of community. We believe fashion is most powerful when it celebrates individuality. As we like to say, “Your individuality is the cherry on top of our designs.” Through Kai, we’re creating a space where people can not only express themselves but also connect and share their journeys toward confidence, sustainable living, and self-acceptance.
Sustainability is at the core of who we are—not just in how we create but in the values we aim to inspire. Our mission goes beyond reducing our environmental impact; it’s about cultivating a more conscious and intentional way of living. By making thoughtful choices in fashion and beyond, we can care for the planet and encourage people to care for themselves.
Kai isn’t just about the clothes you wear—it’s about the story you tell and the legacy you create. Together, we’re redefining what it means to live authentically and sustainably, celebrating the unique beauty within each of us while making a meaningful impact on our communities and our world.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Adaptability: One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the importance of staying flexible and open to change. The road to success isn’t linear, and challenges will come your way, but being adaptable allows you to navigate those moments with resilience. Whether it’s shifting your strategies, learning new skills, or pivoting your vision slightly, adaptability ensures you’re always moving forward.
• Advice: For those starting out, take time to reflect on your ability to embrace change. Start small—try stepping outside your comfort zone in low-risk situations. With time, it’ll become second nature to handle challenges as opportunities to grow.
2. Commitment to Self-Development: Growth starts from within. I found that working on myself—mentally, emotionally, and professionally—keeps me going, even in tough times. Investing in mastermind classes, connecting with mentors, or even reading books that provide insights from successful entrepreneurs in my industry have been game-changers. Personal development not only improves your skill set but strengthens your mindset, which is critical for long-term success.
• Advice: Make self-development a non-negotiable part of your journey. Dedicate time to learning, whether it’s through formal education, online courses, or mentorship. Surround yourself with people who inspire you and push you to grow.
3. Mastering Communication and Sales: Understanding how to speak the language of your audience is essential for building trust and connecting with people. Whether you’re pitching your product, sharing your brand story, or engaging with your community, communication is the bridge between your vision and your audience. Sales isn’t just about closing deals—it’s about forming genuine relationships that show your value and create long-lasting loyalty.
• Advice: Focus on understanding your audience deeply—what are their struggles, needs, and aspirations? Practice active listening, refine your storytelling skills, and remember that authenticity is key. Building trust and delivering value will set you apart.
Ultimately, my journey has taught me that success isn’t just about having a great product or idea—it’s about the constant effort to grow, adapt, and connect with others in a meaningful way. For anyone just starting, I’d say: be curious, be patient, and always be ready to learn. The combination of personal growth, adaptability, and effective communication will carry you farther than you can imagine.
